Does a bass being a lightweight indicate a negative?

From a musical acoustics perspective it is the boundary conditions that rule sustain. If the bridge and the nut are extremely stiff and do not wiggle then the sustain goes on for a very long time. If they are loose not so much. Could a heavier bass be stiffer - yes but so could a graphite neck...

    5 String stigma?

Agreed no truth to discrimination about numbers of strings. Excellent players like the ones you mentioned above (Wooten, Sheehan, Entwistle, Rocco, Jaco, Stanley Clarke, etc) could play anything put in their hands - long scale, short scale, 4 strings, 6 strings, tuned to high C or low B or even...

    5 String stigma?

I have brought 4, 5 and 6 string basses to lots of gigs and no one ever cared how many strings I had as long as I did not get in the way of what they were playing. The real issues are not those relating to being or looking like everyone else, they are to being an excellent collaborator and...

    5 String stigma?

By the way most bass amps can not do a very good job reproducing the low B but the high C gives you a lot more melodic and chordal options which work fine in jazz duos and trios but not so well in larger ensembles.

    5 String stigma?

I too have been playing basses and guitars for a long time and have a Seven string jazz guitar, a six string bass, several normal 4 string basses and six string guitars as well as two baritone guitars tuned to low A. To me the issue is what is the bottom string reference - with many years of...

    5 String stigma?

My two cents as a guitar player and bass player is add a higher string tuned to either a B or a C not a lower one. It permits you to preserve the E string as reference making it far easier to play, and also almost no bass amps can actually do a decent job of reproducing a low B.

    Baritone guitar suggestions

Thank you - you describe exactly what I was wondering about resonance, acoustic volume, and tone difference. As a jazzer who plays both guitar and bass, I have a semi hollow Schecter 7 string, Godin Jazz Multiac and Epiphone 335 and 339 which are all semi hollow guitars and all of my basses...

    Baritone guitar suggestions

Just wondering why - I have been considering these two versions (semi and solid) and am leaning toward the solid because it has humbuckers and the semi doesn't. If it were not so hard to find both to play in a store I would go in person so any advice or insight would be welcome.
