Yes, Bruce Bars, that was the other thread, thanks.

I found it, or at least one of them. Guitar and Bass Neck Threaded Inserts

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Sometimes I just don't know what to search for. I was looking for information on neck bolt inserts which I remember seeing many months ago, but not been able to locate the thread (or threads). As the neck will be off and on a fair few times, with a practice body or two before possibly a final...

Some more great points and thanks for bringing those threads to my attention. I had seen the MPU Brown Bass thread, which was very intersting. There's so much to go through on here, I really need to find more time to look deeper and not get side-tracked.

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

The jigsaw I have was £50 around 10 years ago and, although I don't expect it will be all that great, I still need to learn how to use it properly. It was the bottom of the blade wandering that was the issue I had before. So I guess cutting slower will improve things, but I expect attaching it...

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Thanks. I already have plenty of MDF to make templates with and plenty of 2x4 to use for a few bodies, so I'll see how that goes before buying the final wood for a body or two. The original body shape is okay, so I'm not planning on straying too far, but appreciate it still needs careful...

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Thanks. Some great points in there. It all leads back to option 3 being the sensible choice. Especially as messing up on option 1 or 2 would mean that I'd have to go with option 3 anyway. Leaving the original body as it is, also means I have something to fall back on if I should completely fail.

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

I'm open to different methods. I'm just looking at what I've already got, rather that buying things I may not use much after making a couple of bass bodies. I definitely need to buy a rasp/file or two, after seeing a few videos on YT.

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Next up is about tools. I don't have access to a band saw, but have the option of using a router or a jigsaw to make initial cuts for the body. I have only used the jigsaw 2 times and didn't get a straight cut, which is most likely my lack of knowledge (at the time) and attempting to cut too...

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Thanks. Option 3 was my first thoughts. But I started thinking about the other 2 options, mainly because it removes the possibility of messing up the neck pocket. But the more I have thought about it, the more I have gone back to thinking option 3 is probably better.

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

I have some random thoughts, if anyone has any advice or suggestions please. Bearing in mind I want to change the pickups in a bass to some that are shorter, plus re-arrange the control layout and maybe a little re-shaping of the body. Would it be easier to: 1. Cut an existing bass body...

Well it's make or break time. It will either be another Stone Henge or I'll pull through this with great aplombe....

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

I have to make a decision on buying a couple of reduce priced basses (for the necks). It feels a bit early, but it could save me £200-£300 if I get them now. No pressure or anything. :nailbiting:

CAD would be nice (and somewhere I do have some professional CAD software from when I was in IT Support) but I think I'll stick to drawings. It'll be interesting to have knob/switch cut-outs, to play about with placement.

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Thank you. You have reminded me that I have a bunch of spare 2x4, which I could use to practice on. Not sure what type of wood it is, as it was sold as "timber" and it didn't matter much for the original purpose. Looking back at the order (7 years ago) it was C16 which is kiln-dried softwood...

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Thanks Bruce. I've seen a lot of your wonderful posts on here, so I'm glad you took the time to comment. I know it's not going to be easy, but I figure I don't have much to lose by trying. Plus, like you say, I don't just get one shot at it. If I fail, I will have used some time and money, but...

Advice on body building (not pumping iron)

Basically, I'm thinking about buying a bass and then replacing the body. Why? 1. I like the neck, which I can't buy separately. 2. I want to replace the pickups, but the Bartolinis in the bass are longer than the pickups I am considering, which may or may not be an issue depending on the...

Is a modular bass a dumb idea?

My knowledge is very limited, but trying to find out more. I have many questions, but will probably start a new thread after some searching.

Is a modular bass a dumb idea?

While I think my point about using the same pickups and pre-amp in a couple of basses is being somewhat missed, there are still some interesting thoughts and opinions. I have been considering buying a couple of basses to mod, so when I'm looking at a pair of pickups and a pre-amp around...

One bass to rule them all

That's bonkers. Do people actually play something like that or just build such things for funsies?
  21. DeanGallberry

Is a modular bass a dumb idea?

Yes, I see your point. I suppose my trail of thought is more about using a decent pair of pickups and pre-amp and being able to swap them between 2 different bass bodies, rather than wanting to change between different pickups in a single bass. (I've edited the initial post to reflect this)
  22. DeanGallberry

Is a modular bass a dumb idea?

Without going in to all the details, I'm wondering if a modular bass would be a good idea or not? Not necessarily to have the option of changing between different pickups, but more so that I can buy a really good pair of pickups and pre-amp and use it in 2 (or more) different bass bodies...

One bass to rule them all

Thanks for the replies. I needed some inspiration. It's actually nice to see that they aren't all ridonkulously expensive choices. After a somewhat worthless journey of buying and selling, I'm looking for a keeper. Okay, maybe 2! So looking around the forum was useful, but having a bunch of...

One bass to rule them all

So I'll get down to business and jump right in with my first post here. Let's pretend for a moment that we are only allowed to own one bass. No ifs, not buts, you can only own a single bass. So what would your choice be and why?
