Double Bass After 47 Years, Switching From Underwood to Gage LifeLine Writeup

Thanks Greg! Glad to hear that. It's much darker sounding than the middier Underwood that was on for decades. Different EQ. I have a Lifeline PU also installed on my Full Size E.German Bass w/C Ext.-also now with FDs changed from EPMs. I just used that Bass for an outdoor Orchestra and Big Band...

Double Bass After 47 Years, Switching From Underwood to Gage LifeLine Writeup

Thanks Povl. The Lifeline PU is in place, and evened out my the bridge on the bass top-top actually sounds full and more even today, but still a bit thuddy on the A&E strings. Obviously, the Underwood PU is easy to install if necessary. The Flex Deluxe are new and have been on for only a few...

Double Bass Still down the Rabbit Hole: Flexocor Deluxe vs Perpetual Starks for best Hybrid full set with C Extension coming from EP Mediums?!?

Thanks Elmer. Need to give the FDs time-not an easy move considering the expense. I was also wondering about a mixed set. So far the FDs sound good Arco and have a decent Jazz Pizz-however, it does make me wonder.

Double Bass Still down the Rabbit Hole: Flexocor Deluxe vs Perpetual Starks for best Hybrid full set with C Extension coming from EP Mediums?!?

Just changed from EPs to Flexocor Deluxe a week ago on my Full Size Plywood East German Bass w/ 45 1/2” string length. I prefer a dark powerful quality-am getting used to the FDs-starting to settle and sound fuller- warming up for both Arco and Pizz. I play 50% Orchestra and 50% Jazz/Big Band/...

Saturday Update: The new set of Flexocor Deluxe were installed Thursday and I’ve been playing Arco & Pizz scales, etc., along with several YouTube Orchestra & Jazz Videos since. Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

UPDATE: After hours of research (!) comparing Flexocors, Perpetual Starks, Permanents, Passione and Spiros, I just ordered a complete set with C Ext E/C of Flexocor Deluxe considering the brightness of the Bass and types of Gigs played: Orchestra, Shows, Big Band and Jazz . Hoping there’s enough...

Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

Hello again Sean. Thanks. Glad to hear! I just changed to a DG Lifeline PU also last Wed. for the Underwood, which I've used since the 70's. Great sound-esp. Arco, but doesn't seem to have as loud a volume as the Underwood(middier tone but cut through)-had to turn volume knob higher on my`GK...

Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

Hello Sean-Thanks. Leaning to a full set of Perpetual Starks with a C Ext. Glad to hear you love them. Do you still use them? If so, do you use a Pickup or Mic? Questioning if they're bright for a long break in period? I stood next to a Principal Bassist with Perpetual Starks on a Hawkes. he...

Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

Thanks Jmiltitsc-I did use Kaplans-Mediums and Heavy. Recorded a Jazz CD with Kaplan Heavy Gauge several years back. great sounding but there was some string unraveling with a few burrs then-maybe it's better now? Also used D'Addario BG Strings when they came out, and Heliocore DB Strings, and...

Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

Thanks Lee-thought as much, but after trying and liking Bassists Basses with various metal core strings, I'm curiou$ if changing will give my Bass the warm and powerful fundamental the EP mediums give playing both Arco & Pizz and be a better more reliable Orch choice.

Thanks Slevage. Yes, the SP was taken out & adjusted. I asked the Tech about that prior to the break as the E/C sound wasn't full like the G,D or A and he thought there'd be a breaking period because of the repair.

Double Bass Metal Dark Sounding Hybrid String set w/C Ext. Choices-Alternative to EP Mediums

Hello everyone. I'm a freelancer and blessed to play in many Pro Jazz small & Big Bands, Symphony & Pit Orchestras. I know all Basses and Bassists are and play differently... My Bass is a (bright sounding) 45 year old Full Size East German Plywood, with a 45 1/2" string length(!) and has a C...

Double Bass Considering Orchestra String Choices-again!

Hello Paps-Thanks for your reply. Spiros are great & long lasting strings, and know many Jazz Bassists that use them in W, M & S Gauge. I stood in Bass sections with a couple of Bass players using the Weichs. I used Spirocore Mediums decades ago and switched to Heliocore (when they came out) at...

Hello Lee:Thanks for your reply. Just watched some amazing playing Videos by Alex Hanna (even piano)and read a couple of interviews. He’s such a fantastic Bassist-interesting story-no wonder he plays so great! I’m used to playing/ practicing a couple to few hours daily, but 5-6+! Also, I’m...

Double Bass Considering Orchestra String Choices-again!

Thanks Mark_T: Thanks.Glad to hear. I do like the dark/warm EP Mediums tone and am quite used to playing them both Arco and Pizz. Actually find my bowing technique improving on the EPs with the daily and consistent practice, but may still have to try other options. This is all good and helpful...

Double Bass Considering Orchestra String Choices-again!

Hello again Seaybass. Appreciate your new reply and clarification. I’ve used EPs since they came out-feel they have a warm/dark Gut-like quality and make my Basses project. Pirastro even sent me a set of Weichs when they came out after I emailed them a recording (MP3) of me playing the EP...

Double Bass Considering Orchestra String Choices-again!

Thanks SeayBass. I do appreciate your & all replies for my dilemma. (I’ve never tried Solo Gauge Strings, Spirocore Weichs or Belcantos…) I’m aware that every Bass/player/season/ Rosin is a factor and “Gear is not the Answer”(Sung to ‘What’s Goin’ On’)… However, lately, my Bass does sound great...

Double Bass Considering Orchestra String Choices-again!

Thanks stefani. Been there with Kaplans-Heavy/Med Gauge unraveled a bit after time & the light had a couple of spurs. My EPs sounded good today & most always, it’s just that fast bowed passages that I’m wondering about. Plan to take a Bow to a Bass Shop and see how the response differs-even...

Hello stefani. Never tried the Temperas but will look into them. FWI Played 'Annie Get your Gun' 4 decades ago(!) fun show-used Spiros at the time, until my Bridge got crunched in a NYC revolving door & the luthier I went to for a repair/new bridge told me my Bass was too bright and should...
