Just curious about the mechanics, wouldn't a double ball string eliminate the need for a setscrew setup at the headstock? I tried a standard string adapter for my Steinberger , and the setscrew setup seemed to cause a lot of string breakage.

The issue with double ball end strings is their limited availability and choice. Otherwise they are perfect on the Steinberger system since it was designed with those in mind.

I never really liked the standard string adaptor though. In my opinion the design has a flaw in that strings run perpendicular to the set screws and the screw alone has to hold the pull. That easily leads to either over-tightening and string breakage - G string mostly - or with the screw ruining the thread which is not complete (another flaw).

The system l use instead, makes the string first bend at 90 degree angle. Some of the pull will disperse here. This way the set screw needs tightening than in the previous scenario. This system IME works better. I did break a G string though (once in five years) before I realized that much less tightening was required.
