1-10 cabs - any experiences?

Hi all. I'm thinking about building a 1-10 cab for living room jamming and recording with a TC RH450 head. I've never seen a 1-10 bass cab, but there are a number of good 10" bass drivers around, so I thought it might actually work, since I'm not after high volume. So, I drafted a cab design that provides pretty decent bass extension, and added a 4" mid driver a la fEarful. Crossover is 18 dB/oct on the 10" to avoid the high mid cone ringing peak, and 12 dB/oct on the mid at 700Hz. The cabinet is deep at 25", but otherwise fairly small.

Anyone try this? I don't want to invest the materials if it's likely to be a dog. Thanks!

I made two 110/6 nEARfuls before I built a real fEARful 15/6.

Nice little cabs. If you go the two way route, perhaps model BP102's for the low end. They handle a lot of low end for tens and will outperform any typical 110 cab both in volume and low end output.

OK, been messing with some designs on this 1-10. One cabinet is 18 1/2" deep (and 15 1/2" square width-height) with a -3 dB point of 49.1 Hz, and the second is 22 1/2" deep with a -3 dB of 43.5 Hz. Not a large difference in -3 dB points, but it says to me that the response of the larger will (of course...) be deeper. The shallower one is better simply because it's smaller, but will I hear a difference in these -3 dB points? I plan on using both a 4 string and a 5 string with it. No requirement for high volume with this setup. Anyone experiment with varying the volume a little bit? Thanks!

Remember that for this small a cab, you aren't trying to produce loud fundamentals. If you tune the cab somewhere between 45-50Hz you should be able to hear plenty of the low E's second harmonic (80Hz) and even for the low B (for the 5 string) 120Hz is fine. Your brain will fill in the rest.

I wouldn't worry about losing any audible sound below 100Hz with such a small cab, so don't lose any sleep over any -dB points below 100Hz. If you can keep 80Hz to less than -3dB all the better. Typically if you build a small cab, you'll get an upper bass/lo-mid bump that will make the cab sound bigger than it is.

That's what most commercial cab builders do anyway.

A little tip...3M Spray Adhesive will hold that vinyl tight to the cab and you won't have to staple it.

Agreed, there is a redo upon us. I don't have the correct router bit for the corners either... Things to look forward to
