100 must know songs

Yes, along with When Doves Cry, two of the best Prince basslines ever.
Rhonda Smith put a nice bassline to it.....
Thats the type of line I use when my band plays it....
Someone mentioned don't do Freebird without a proper arrangement, not just Freebird, don't do any song without a proper arrangement. If you know how long the guitarist is going to solo you don't need to be constantly looking at him/her and all songs will be a known length instead of rambling on for hours and boring the audience rigid. Everyone will know when the ending is and if you all finish together it sounds pretty tight, if not it is just a sloppy mess. It makes playing so much easier and means you can be looking at the audience instead of each other. The audience is far more interesting, and a lot of them better looking than the other band members. (Certainly in my band, me included)
If the guitarist wants another verse of solo then that is fine, but have a signal, that way you all know where you are.
The 100 songs you want to be learning are the 100 that will fit with venues you are likely to be playing, Weddings and functions will be different to bars or festivals etc, so without knowing your intended venues it is a little difficult to predict, and it is probably regional as well. You need to do a bit of research. Looking on the websites of bands that play the circuit you want to play will be useful if they post their song lists.

I'm curious are these songs you like or songs that a lot of bands play in your neck of the woods?
Were both in the midwest. I'm from Michigan. But i like these songs, but alot of cover bands in my neck of the woods play these songs, some not from this list. But i've heard a little bit of everything. From Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground to Band of Gypsys(Jimi Hendrix's side band) covers to a reggae cover of Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay. If someones doing covers, this is definitly not the best list in the world, but i do think this is music many people would enjoy. But in actuality isn't this whole thread just everyone's opinion for songs to know? It will vary by person. What I feel as a must know song will probably be different from what you think is. Just trying to help someone out

You can rock the heck out of an old Elvis tune like Hound Dog or Blue Suede Shoes, and everyone in the place from 8 to 80 will dance.
Also, depending on the crowd Born to be wild goes over with no problem for a rock crowd.
If you are playing places where people dance then you got to give them the right tunes to dance to. Ever go to a wedding and see what happens when a DJ plays the twist? Its packed in seconds. You can rock the heck out of it and still keep the feel of the tune for people to dance.

I was just curious if your list was based on what you wanted to hear or play or on what was being played in your neck of the woods.
Not only is it fun, but if you wanna play in a (cover) rock band these days, you just about have to have this one under your belt. Play it with a pick. Why? Because I said so!!!

now as to why did i ask for 100 "mk songs", thing is that i'm moving to MA next summer, and don't want to miss out bands cos I don't know songs or keep them waiting (like "ok, give me a few days to learn the stuff) or something like that, u get the point. And gee, i'm getting bored here cos i can't get a serious band with the "ok guys i'll play with you unitl summer and then i'm gone" story. but as i see it, "most popular gig songs" are more or less the same here in Europe.

i'd say i've heard about 50% of those songs being played by a cover band at some point. but i think those other songs would do very well. go to a bar or something thats got a dj playing 50s-80's, country, rock, pop what have you and see which songs get people moving/singing. write down the songs and learn accordingly. but especially true for michigan, if you play a kid rock tune, you own the crowd. but one particular band that would do well in the northeast i think is aerosmith, being that they're from boston.
