By 'amateur' do you mean 'play for free' or do you mean actually make money, just maybe not enough to live on?

Because there is a hierarchy:
1) Pay To Play (just don't...)
2) Play For Free (need a good reason...)
3) Actually get paid _something_

Big gap between 2) and 3) ...

Birmingham used to be a pretty good mix of available gigs and good pay. Those days are gone. I play mostly church gigs now, I hate it so much.
