The JBL's didn't work all that great either...

It amazes me how much volume and tone comes from a 250 watt 2x10 35lb combo these days compared to what we had to schlep around back in the 70s.

It amazes me how much volume and tone comes from a 250 watt 2x10 35lb combo these days compared to what we had to schlep around back in the 70s.

No kidding, and when you take say a pair of Subway 215's with an 800 watt into 2 ohm amp (or a pair of 800 watt at 4 ohm amps), the amount of usable volume and low frequency extension that's available is night and day different than the "old days" gear... and at about 1/2 the size, 1/3 the weight and 1/2 the cost (in today's dollars).

I still have two rigs from back in the day, both from the mid-sixties. 0ne is a Bassman black face with 2x12 cab, the other is an Ampeg SB12. These days, they are only used infrequently at home. Every guitarist who has played through my old Bassman wants to buy it. But, it isn't a gig worthy for bass if clarity and volume are needed. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

The old 50 w Bassman head Is probably the greatest guitar amp that Fender ever made. They just didn't realize it at the time. One of the best sounding guitarists I've ever played with used a white bassman head and a Marshall 412 angled cabinet. That amp just sounded sweet and he's kicked himself many times for getting rid of it. In fact the bassman circuit was so good that Marshall copied it.
