well, the gk backline 112's stock speaker blew... loved its sound though :hmm:

ive been looking into celestion orange label replacements but theyre not available in twelve inchers anywhere i checked (if they are, please let me know)
also, ive been looking into the carvin ps12-*ohm replacement, much cheaper, but any thoughts on the quality?

im looking for a 12 inch speaker, 8 ohms, minimum handling of 300w, with a nice midrange and tight highs.

thanks, any input is appreciated.

I modeled this speaker extensively and its tiny internal dimensions really preclude most commercial 12" speakers.

With a Deltalite 2512 II for instance it's absolutely atrocious...rolls off really, really rapidly under 100hz. That box is undersized even for a really gentle 10" driver (around .75 cf internal from what I can measure).

The Basslite series might work, I dunno.

Which probably means that it's less than optimal with the OEM driver as well. There's no such thing as 'magic' OEM drivers that work any better than those available at retail. For that matter OEM drivers tend to be variants of the least expensive retail drivers.

Unfortunately no one can make a valid recommendation of what might sound similar to the original driver without seeing the original driver's data sheet, and cab manufacturers won't give you one, assuming they even have one. Most don't.

I have two Backline 112s, replaced the speaker in each with the Eminence Beta 12A II. Rated at 250W RMS, and the price is right, less than $50 if you shop around a bit. The only problem I ran into is that the stock speaker uses six screws while anything else uses eight, so you'll have to drill some holes to make it work. No biggie. As for the sound... without changing anything else, I think the stock speakers are a tad brighter which I prefer. I adjusted my EQ and effects to accommodate that, and I'm completely happy with them now.

i just took a look at the beta 12's frequency response chart and theres not much going on above 10k Hz, whereas the alpha ha presence beyond 10k, which accounts for the brightness.

the lowest response on the stock speaker is at 50Hz. how far from this can i deviate? ive sen many candidates with a 42-48Hz minimum and i was considering those.

as stated above, the Deltalite 2512 II has terrible response in this cabinet, but thats due to its relatively high minimum response at 68Hz. thats a definite no go...

however, i found that carvin's PS12-8 matches the stock speaker well, but i cannot find a recommended enclosure size. anybody have experience with these drivers?

Carvin Ps12s sound OK, light on the low end but with a cab that size EVERYTHING is gonna be light on the low end.

I would almost consider redoing the baffle and putting a high quality 8 in there =P That's about the right size.

I just went through this same thing fixing up a GK Backline 112.

I just bought the amp last week off CL for $30 because the speaker was blown. At first I only wanted the head to power another cab I had for basement practicing, but I saw a store on ebay selling the 250w Eminence 12" for $45 bucks plus shipping. So I decided to go ahead and put the new speaker in, and it sounds great, I have no complaints about the sound.

Now mind you, I have no idea what the orginal speaker sounded like because the speaker was already removed from the cab when I bought it, but it does seem a tad on the bright side. And so far I've played my Jazz Bass and Wal through it, and detuned a hole step, the lows come out just fine for home/basement practicing.

thanks for the input caca de kick! i now have more faith in going for a high power speaker.

my ultimate plan is a bit off the wall... ive already removed and rackmounted the 100w head from the cab and im going to switch the standard male 1/4'' connector to a female connector on a jack plate, allowing it to be used as an extension cabinet for my swr or with the GK head. my setup consists of the swr pumping 450w into a nemesis 410 for the lows and that kick to the gut, and the Gk into the 12'' for the more searing mids, highs and GROWL. ive found that in this case, the GK sound is more in the amp than anything, so im ok with a slightly deeper speaker.

thanks again to everyone thats posted

so i just called GK service and their staff is greatly helpful (even though my enunciation wasnt quite up to par:hiding:)

theyre going to fit a backline from the warehouse with a 12'' from the NEO112 with a neodymium coil and 300w handling. depending on how this works out and if it even fits, theyll reply with a yay or nay for that. if nay, im back to square one. cest la vie
