12" Speaker replacement for a 100 watt 4 ohm combo amp

After about an hour of sanding last night, I got the speaker hole in my Crate BT1000 combo amp JUST big enough to squeeze in the Eminence Beta 12A speaker. Super tight fit! WOW! What a difference this speaker made! You can't even call this thing a practice amp now! You could seriously use this thing for small gigs. I plan on using it to play in the basement, for church services, and band practices...so basically everything except large gigs. I'm very happy with it! It's portable, has a built-in tuner on top, decent power (100W,) and now has some balls with the new speaker in it. Thank you so much Bill for recommending the Eminence Beta 12A speaker for this project!

One more quick question for you Bill: Now that I have an 8 ohm speaker instead of a 4 ohm in the combo amp, can I still hook up a 4 ohm cabinet to the external speaker jack in the back of the amp like before or is this now a no-no with the 8 ohm speaker now in the mix? Thanks again!

You know there are several power tools that could have had it done in 1-2 minutes? That tight hole stuff mentioned earlier is a red herring. The hole need to be "tight enough". It doesn't even need to be particularly even and pretty. It gets covered anyway.

But anyway, congrats on a new lease on life : }

Yeah I know there are tools out there that could have done the job faster, but I got it done and kinda enjoyed doing it. I had plenty of sandpaper here that I rarely use anyways so I was happy to use up a sheet. Last week I caulked the inside of the cabinet. That was more work and mess than the sanding was. Just happy it's done now and I can enjoy using it on a daily basis.

Bill, your suggestion of another Beta 12 cab would be awesome, but I don't have one of course. I've got a 2x10-4 ohm cab and a 4x10-8 ohm cab at my disposal.

Really hate to reopen this old thread BUT............. Same situation as above 100watt 4 ohm amp head and looking for a cheap 12" alternative..... Thought I would get an already built box from and ebay supplier and put in a speaker...... Question I have is...... What is the difference, sound wise, between the above mentioned Eminence BETA-12A @ 8 ohms and the Eminence DELTA-12LFC @ 4 ohms? I know all the obvious answers but would the LFC be a better fit?

Beta has got more mids, delta lf requires midrange driver to be crossed to but has more lows. Emi basslite s2012 costs a buck or two more and has mids like beta, lows like delta and one third the weight.
