Personally, I would put as much money as you can in one and as little as you can in the other.. that way you can upgrade down the road.. If you buy two pieces of mid-range gear, you will want to replace both of them down the line and that leaves you with more wasted cash ultimately.
I would put most of the cash down on a nice bass and put aside a small amount for a cheap amp. You should be able to scour craigslist and come up w/ something. It is harder to sell an amp since the shipping costs make them generally difficult to ship.. so you can get some nice price cuts buying used.
In fact with that $1200 you should fairly easily be able to get a MIA fender off the classified board here and a nice big combo amp or a half stack used locally..

farmboy, I would get your G&L from somewhere with a nice return policy, or try to play one first.. I know it is attractive at its price and it certainly is a good value, but if your church is anything like any of the ones I've been to, it may be a little overboard. It is quite versatile, and it is possible to get a mild tone, but it has its own voice, and that voice is quite mean!

And that amp isnt going to be loud enough and your just facing the inevitable of wasting money cause your going to want to replace it down the road.

I've just been going through this.. I have been bass shopping for months and everything else jsut seems like gimmicks to me.. you really don't need to be able to make every tone under the sun come out of one instrument.. you need an instrument that makes one tone that is good enough to fit anywhere
IMO, get a good amp. Your Ibanez will suddenly sound much better!
I agree you need a decent amp first, after taht get a carvin!
