13 preamp tubes?!?!

If any of my amps was sounding nasty and fractious like that I would be trying very hard to find out why and I certainly would not be recording it for advertising purposes. I think Peavey should note that designs acheiveing the best growly dirty bass sounds running 6 EL 34's
had 4 ecc83's where made in a factory employing a maximum of eight
persons including the cleaner in Southend and closed in 1978 why the hell didn't they just copy the Roost SR 150. They would have sold millions.
I like the totally unconvinced expression he has shortly after fliping to the gain channel on the video.
OH why don't you play "peaches" by the "stranglers" mate and convince us all that you have a real HIwatt killer. Like ****!
Where did they get those transformers they are a complete joke, even
less well equipped than a new marshall and thats saying something.:spit:

well sorry mate. some of us don't have the money to own loads of stuff, classic jaguar sports cars, and go sailing. This is the best I can afford (and it really is the best for the money). Don't knock it before you try it. It really is a nice amp.

oh yeah , ive read all the threads and posted on most of them . but what i want to know is other than JUST changing tubes and rebias , what would it take to drop some kt88 or 6550 in this amp ? new tranny's , new caps , new what ?? can it be done ? i have this amp on order , and if its not loud enough i cant get rid of it , so i need to know some upgrades and mods ....

There's thread about this amp that contains such information.

Check post number 48 I believe.

Ahh I didn't get that in your inicial post asking it since it said tubes that would give you more power and those tubes suggested will supply more power :D

As for those other mods, would it really be worth it. Also, changing the type of tube won't always give you more power, and even if you were running KT-88's the amount of extra power would probably not be heard in terms of volume. You'd get a tonal difference which might be a preceivable increase?

You might want to drop BbbyBld a message since he is an Engineer at Peavey Electronics. I'm sure he can point you in the right direction and give you certain information as well.

so what would it take to replace the tubes with a more powerful tube and get more watts ?????

The simple answer is...you'd have to change essentially everything except the preamp.

The power supply will be undersized so that would require a new power transformer as well as a redesigned rectifier and filter circuit to create the proper plate, heater and bias voltages. The output transformer will need to be replaced to have adequate power handling and proper primary and secondary impedances. The driver/phase inverter circuit may need to change to provide the new power tubes with the proper drive for the enhanced output power. Hence, only the preamp would remain unchanged.

im sure if its actually 225 watts tube , then ill be fine . im using a modded traynor 200 right now and love it . i sold a svt classic and kept the traynor for the better tone at lower volumes . so after i get it im sure ill use it as is . but i have been VERY dissapointed in the mesa busters ive had ... they will not run a 810 cab for me . so i have been skeptical of 200 watters in the past until i got the traynor .

Cant get much for anything with a 5.3 litre V12 these days and I certainly cant afford to drive it anymore.
Cant afford a lot of stuff these days so I use all the studio down time
to collect old high quality parts and broken amps and make frankenstein amps of all sorts. I cant afford to go and buy new ****!. One amp, I trawled e bay for 3 years to afford and get all the genuine bits for.
My great uncle was Admiral Sir Henry Harwood his brother, my Grandfather was a Vice Commodore and my father was Leftennent Commander Richard Harwood RNVR so sailing in my family was not exactly what you would call a voluntary occupation matey.
Avast and draw close!, the five of us kids was press-ganged I tell thee.
Also I am basing my judgement of the Peavey on the recording alone
perhaps I am letting a little prejudice creep in as I know enough about building amps to know two ECC 83's where one is conventionally a splitter will not get you that kind of gain without solid state help and you bet I think I can hear it. So what model op amp's do they actually use in this all tube hi gain design?
The transformers are very small for a 150, and after all if a Marshall 50 has Two EL34 tubes, A Marshall 100 has four EL34 tubes and a Sound City 120 has six a Roost SR150 has six a Real Hiwatt DR 201
Was 200 watts but had 4 KT 88's only later did Hiwatt come out with a cheeper six EL 34 design but still calling it a 200? and we reckoned that the old sound city 120 was just as loud clean and had exactly the same output transformer but the Hiwatt six valve was a lot thicker and growlier but not much louder.
Can somebody tell me more about this 225 watts:scowl: and how exactly they are measuring it.:ninja:

There are 3 preamp tubes (2-12AX7, 1-12AT7)--half of the AT is the splitter.

If you don't believe it will do 225 watts, get your hands on one, crank it up and measure the output. It'll run like that all day--I promise.

BTW...an EL34 is an excellent tube for amplifying bass guitar. It's all about how you use it.
