I live in Montreal, Canada, and I was thinking about renting an upright to see what I like better between the cello and the contrabass. Now, renting my cello costs 65$/month and renting a contrabass would cost 130$/month. Is it me, or is that just ridiculus?

Double Bass 130$/month? Is that normal?

If you plan on renting it for more than ten months, I would just buy it. You could probably get a decent Englehardt for less.
If you're just comparing it to a cello for a month or two, then the $135 could be worth it, if the bass they are renting to you is a really nice bass, and not just an entry level plywood bass.
It would be a better comparison, and it would train you to how a good bass is supposed to sound, if you decide to stick to it, and buy one later.
If you plan on buying, or even renting long term, of course you're better off if you can scrape the money together for the bass. Heck, getting a loan is better than renting to own from these guys. You're basically paying double their purchase price, if you intend to own it.
I'm renting a ply from L&M for $60.00 a month out in Victoria. Just to give you an idea what places are charging. They had a carved bass which was going to be more, but I can't remember what it was going to be.
I've rented from the L&M here for roughly $80/month. As far as I know the rental price is dependant on the retail value of what it is that you're renting (whether it's in new condition or been in and out the door a few times), unless it works differently in the band department. To me, $130 better be getting me a really nice rental. I'd expect a $4000+ instrument, in top notch working order.
