1600w too much

There's just no reasoning with some people:hiding:

I played a gig last night...three band showcase in a rather large club.
Band 1: small hartke 300 watt head and 410 rig. It sounded passable.
Band 2: swr workingman's 15 combo-sounded horrible-thin, underpowered, not very present.
Band 3: I used an eden wt800B bridged at ~1200 watts into a Dr Bass BL212. It was huge, thick, clean, and devastating. I'd like to think some of this "was my fault," but the fact that I had 1200 watts for thick creamy Eden goodness behind me probably had a lot to do with it too...

Richard: edited my previous post since that seemed to offend you.
If, when you can't explain to folks after repeatedly trying, that having 1600 watts available doesn't mean that one must turn all the way up to be taking advantage of the sonic goodness that results from having a lot of headroom...then you're not dealing with a rational thinking person.
You play a Carvin B1500 a lot, right? So, I'm sure you "get" that having huge power on tap doesn't mean you must have all 1900 watts coming out at once to feel the depth, solidity, transient response, dynamics, etc that huge horsepower bring to the table at low volumes.
Sorry if my choice of words offended, it was not intended to.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about the feeling of big watts behind you. And I know how it can be frustrating to explain what seems (to the would-be explainer, at least) like an obvious point repeatedly, without apparent effect. It's just my personal opinion (no more than that) that in forums like this, a baseline level of civility is valuable. Even, or especially, when you feel like metaphorically banging someone's head against the wall (a feeling I know well). That's all I was trying to suggest (particularly since I agreed with you otherwise).

Why would the 1500 watt amp paired with a 2X12 cabinet be considered overkill, when the 300 watt SVT with an 8X10 cab isn't?

Yeah, they're loud, but only when you turn them up.

Which i'm sure has been done before - maybe more than once?

And on the accordian - I remember hearing a saying, not sure where from, I think of it everytime i hear an accordian mentioned.

The way I Heard it was ,"A gentleman is someone who can play the banjo but doesn't." Well, it's true either way.:D

For some reason, in recent years, I've been playing in lots of groups with accordionists. I used to hate the instrument; now I actually love it.

It sure is fun to bust accordionists' chops, though. There are lots of accordion jokes out there, not all of them particularly good, but most of them sufficiently annoying to their targets to be worth telling.

So the only difference between these three rigs/basses/players that you thought was significant was the wattage of the amps? That's what you're using to support your opinion?

What was that crack again you made about dealing with rational thinking people? ;)

Yeah, there are just times when "If the shoe fits, wear it" or "Stupid is as stupid does" just plain scream out at you from some folks, and nothing else quite captures the moment quite like "moron" . . . . . I guess I regard "moron" as basically the right of stupidity taken to unhealthy extremes . . .

why buy a farrari when most speed limits are 30? Because theirs going to be that one time, where your giong to see a long, strait road ahead of you, and your ford mondeo just aint gonna cut it!

If you can you should. - Your not losing anything so finances considering no worries. like everyones said just have a little respect for what your speakers say to you! s'all good :)

I roll my eyes at people that say you can have too much power, then they tell me they use a 280w amp.

Man, if I could get a 10,000 watt amp that was reasonably portable, I'd use the hell out of it. :D

Seriously, though, I have a 700w rig and if I had the chance to double my power, I'd jump all over it. "Plenty" has nothing to do with "Enough".:spit: :spit: :spit:
