I sold a pedal to someone in the US today.
It used to be that you'd walk in Canada Post, hand them a package and tell them the value of its contents, pay and walk out.
Today, I go in and they tell me to download this shady one-star rated application called Zonos Prepay made by "iGlobal Exports" that collects my contact info, usage data, location, surroundings and diagnostics. Of course, I have to create an account. Then they ask me to take a picture of what I'm sending—not the box. They want a picture of what's in the box. So, there I am, at the post office counter, unboxing everything. The app then tells me what the thing is: some kitchen gadget made in China worth $65. Close, but no cigar: an EQ pedal made in Canada worth $300.
Then it asks me to pay $38 in duties. What happened to the USMCA? Why do I have to pay duties?
I'm not paying $38, so I do the whole thing again and declare it as a gift. Oh, but now the app tells me gifts need to be under $150! *** can you buy under $150 in this economy?
