18" Black Widow can't handle it?

thanks a lot for all your help. i already have tested the different inputs on the cab, and its definately a problem of the 18", the two 10s are ok. the cab has a built in crossover, so the 10s don't get any low frequencies. and its the same situation with only the 18 enabled. i will check the cab with a different amp and vice versa. i'm heading for two gigs this week and a short tour in about two weeks, so probably i can't change it anymore for now... as i'm getting more and more frustrated with the rig, i'll probably sell the cab or even the amp to. but it's so hard to find good equipment, when you're on a budget. and i can't go back to solid state now...

Sorry, but that is bull. Yes, it may be true technically but not in actual application. If you don't have the wattage to achieve the volume you need and the speaker can take more power, you are underpowered.

Case and point. My TE 215 sounds good with my 350 watt Trace head and it can get very loud. I hooked up an Acoustic 150B (rated 120 watts) and although it sounds killer I can not get the same volume. If I try to get the same volume it starts to distort and sounds like crap. The 215 requires more clean power to attain the higher volume without distorting.

No, its not underpowering your speaker, its just you dont have enough power period, claiming you are underpowering the speaker is making out that the speaker cant handle lower volumes or is somehow impaired by not having adequete power, which, is not the case,

And i think thats just a sparkling way to put over a point "Thats bull, but your right! except for when you take it this way", please . . .

That is the case IMO. The cab is impaired (how about hindered?) if it doesn't have enough power (underpowering) to achieve full volume. Trying to drive a 1000 watt cab with a 100 watt amp is underpowering IMO. There is no way to reach the full potential of the cab with such low power and in effect you limit the cabs capabilities.

True. Technically it is correct that you can't underpower a cab. However, in practical application you can. It is just a different way of looking at it. Semantics I guess.

I apoligize for the rude statement in my previous post. It was uncalled for. Sorry, bad day.

its alright, ive been having alot of them aswell recently.

But, if you were to add another cab, you would have more volume, even though the cabinet individually was recieving less power, you would be "underpowering" two cabinets.

Because its rated to handle up to 500 watts (rms) it doesnt mean you have to give it that :p

Ive run my 8x10 with my SVT, the 810 is 600 watt rms, and in a gigging situation i didnt have the volume on the SVT past 2 1/2, im pretty sure it wouldnt have been putting out 300 watts even on the hardest notes, but, there is no way the cab was hindered ;)

A friend of mine had this problem, he was running an svt 3 pro though so i dont know why that would happen, becuase they are what 1200 watts? i never liked the black widow speaker a whole lot. i guess they just cant do it eh?

Well, for a start, SVT 3 Pros are only 450 watts, not 1200. And thats if its a newer one, if its older it will be a lower power.

And maybe its a problem with the BW 18's ? I have a peavey 2x15 with BWs and its by far the best 2x15 ive heard, and ive heard/used Trace Elliot, Marshall and Ampeg 2x15's

I still have an 1820 from back in the day. I cut the 10s off and made a separate cab. Years later I cut another third off the back of both cabs. Very easy to transport. Years later I made a head out of a Combo 300 and run the 18 and 2x10s in parallel for 2 ohms. Gives me the full output of the Combo head. Even with much less cab volume it's a formidable rig and stays in a rehearsal hall. My kid got some mileage out of the cabs with an Ampeg V7 guitar head. That was a screaming combination.

I would run it without the idiot built-in cross over. 2 oms parallel, 8 ohms series, which ever your tube head can switch to.

When you reconed the 18 did you carefully swab out all dirt and foreign material from the gap the voice coil rides in. Very important step. My 18 and 2 Black Widow 15s I have are basically indestructable. And they sound pretty good.
