Here's a similar, non-refinned 58 - note the checking on the neck. My guess is that they got an unstable (or "less stable") batch of nitro around that time in 58 ....

She's a real beauty. I've been watching that one around for a while - probably since the fall or so - wouldn't be surprised if they accepted a much lower offer on it.

The description is a bit deceiving though. The PU's are from the 70's. That's kind of the deal-breaker for me on spending close to $5k on a vintage piece.

To be honest though, there's so much which isn't original about that bass (body finish, pickups, tuners etc.) that it's hardly got much value as a 'collectors bass' - even though it's priced like one!

The checking on the neck isn't really like anything that I've seen before either, although I'm not the world's leading authority on the subject - just an enthusiast .

Personally, I would bet that most buyers would rather save $3k and buy a Roadworn series to just use, or would rather find another couple of $k to get a much more original, re-finished pre-CBS Fender to collect .

I've got a '57 with the old tele-style pup. (Body refinned, and early '70s pup.) Neck is untouched, AFAIK.

Yeah, the finish on the neck is checked quite a bit. Not as much as the pix above--but quite a bit.

Okay, I really dislike people who, in a cliche manner, find beauty in everything that's abstract and ugly, but Jeebus, that fingerboard looks gorgeous.

It probably spent an extended period of time in an attic or mini-warehouse that wasn't climate-controlled.
