1972 V4B!

I always liked my V4(B)’s more than SVT’s I’ve had. 7027a’s are all I’ve ever had in mine, most of the time NOS quads. Worth the money to me.

My only complaints was the weight and the width. But the tone is worth it.

I've owned almost every era of SVT (except for the most recent) and probably close to a dozen over the years now. I've also owned quite a few V4B's and my experience is the same. Always preferred the V4B's.

Pretty much. That's what Dino told me at least. The preamps are basically identical, but with 100w power sections.

Granted, tube selections offer differences in themselves, but pre out/di out, you probably couldn't tell the difference between the sets.

The V4B ri is the best sounding (and looking for that matter) amp I've ever played through. And I've played SVTs on backlines quite a few times. Though, owning one gave me a whole lot of time to get to know it. I'm sure that if I ever owned any SVT, it'd be the same deal.

I found a JJ datasheet that indicates the pin out is different 6L6GC VS 7027A

Compatibility depends on how the tube sockets in the amp are wired. In some amps they function as essentially the same tube. Other amps may work fine with one, but not be able to run the other. This goes for the Tung Sol 7027A and 7581A as well.

7027 info. Careful with swapping 6L6 and 7027. Some amps are okay, some not because of the extra pin usage on the 7027. If it's a 6L6 amp and you plug in a 7027 you might have a problem. 6L6 doesn't use pins 1 or 6 so those might be used as tie points for other stuff in the circuit. A 7027 would not work in those amps

One of my dumber moves was passing on a V4B some years ago. But gol-dang it, was it heavy!

That's a good article. For the record mine had mis matched 7027's in it so we opted for a matched set to replace them. I had took it in for excessive hum. Lots of leaky capacitors replaced and a new set of tubes and it's running fine.
