1973 Fender Precision black over sunburst?

Found some pics of my old 1974 Jazz (kinda bummed I sold this one now, what a beauty!)...

Some more pics of the "73" P. The neck seems to be 72, and the body is routed like my 75 which matches the 75 pickups.
The pickguard is the older version with the holes for the thumbbar on the treble side.

But what´s so SPECIAL about the neck?

Looks like it's at least partially a parts bass. 3 years is a big gap between the neck and the pickup dates. I think we can say the finish is at least original though.

I guess you are right, at least the neck and pickguard had been exchanged.

But good to know about the black finish!

If the body is a 75, wouldn't that mean the bridge should be in the 'correct' position unless they were still further back up into 75?

Personally, I wouldn't pay serious money for this bass.

Yeah, it's defintiely not a "serious money" bass. That went out the window with the extra bridge holes (and now the '75 pickup). Even though the bridge mod makes it easier to intonate, I'd take the longer G screws over those unsightly holes any day. My guess is the body is late '73ish (since it still has the misplaced bridge). Does it have holes on the body for the thumbrest in the upper position under that guard?

Real money means different things to different people, but really...this is a parts bass with some very obvious work done (like the bridge), if he's asking for 'stock' cash for that era bass, its not worth it. Replaced pots, mis-matched neck/body, bridge moved, etc. In that headstock picture, is that a shadow, or is that some kind of 'off grain'? The 'special' designation might be less a special order and more like a factory second.

That's why I asked, I looked there but couldn't tell for sure. It looks like the G string screw might extend further past the edge of the bridge plate than the other screws. It could be an illusion due to the angle of the image.

Man, that headstock grain is wild. Love the black over sunburst too.

Unfortunately it's only worth what the parts would bring plus an adder for the cool factor.

If SPECIAL means factory second, it might be because of the wood pattern in the headstock.

I have an offer to buy a 73 precison, the finish seems to be black over sunburst.

I know that they made oversprays in the 60s, but as late as 1973?

I will try to get some pics tomorrow to include in this thread.
