1975 Gibson SG Bass

A little while back my buddy was attempting to shop me his 1975 Gibson SG Bass. I didn't have the money for it at the time but things are looking up right now so I'm reconsidering.

He says all the parts are original except for the tuning pegs. Output is a little weak because the pickups are so old. The action could be better and the body isn't in prime condition either. BUT, it has so much character!

What does everyone else think about this? He said market value is about $600, but is "open to offers".

That's not an SG Bass, it is an SB bass, either a 300 or 400 depending on scale length:

They were the cheapest basses Gibson made at the time, and $600 seems pretty steep for a beat up example. I think that is older than 1975 as well, at least according to the link above they got replaced by the 350/450 which have a different pickup configuration.

I would say $400 tops, its all corroded, it will take a couple of hundred bucks to bring it back to life you have to figure.

I just love a much-played bass like that. My '61 Jazz has a little more of the finish on it than that Gibson. This surprised me,I'm almost ashamed to say this,but,that bass is the first one of those that I've seen.

Hmm, interesting. Seems my friend didn't know exactly what he was talking about then. I wasn't going to give him $600 anyways, just from the condition alone. Thanks for the info

It was the very low budget bass for Gibson at the time. Some people really like them.

I've always been curious about those basses having never played one, but yes....$600 is top, top end for an example in that condition.
