Fretless
  1. Y
Here’s a killer fretless Jazz with a mutt pedigree and serious mojo. It started life as a Rootbeer brown ‘76 Jazz, you can see the original finish in the neck pocket, and at some point, it was stripped and finished natural, and was routed for a battery under the pickguard. Tight 3 bolt neck joint, and...well...it’s fretless. Now, Fender didn’t offer a factory fretless in 76, but anything is possible- not saying it’s a factory job, but that binding is untouched, and that’s a nice slab o’ rosewood. Neck is definitely Fender as you can see from the build tags on the heel. Green ink date stamp has faded, can make out 020 and barely 46A Dots were added at the “on the fret” position. Neck profile is typical 70’s Fender, feels great. Pickguard is 76, two pots are 76, cap is correct, control plate might be original but has an extra hole for a switch. Pickups are an overwound Reimer in the neck (7.1k) and an 81 Fender in the bridge (6.6k), bridge is a threaded saddle Fender 60’s repro. Tuners are correct, there’s a filled hole for an extra string tree.
Sound? Big. Like, really big. If JPJ played fretless on the first 4 Zeppelin records, it would sound like this bass. Back pickup solo’ed is barky and clear. Weight? Around 10 lbs, really good for an ash body mid-70’s Jazz. Ships in a functional TKL case. Price reflects the ‘mojo’, $1250 shipped to Canada and US 48.

Control cavity shots...all brass shields are there, both volume pots date to 76, tone pot is newer, original big blue cap..
