Have a chance to trade for a 1976 P bass with a J pickup. None original bridge and tuners, otherwise fine. The J pickup is older, a 1963. Natural finish ash body maple neck. Guy wants $1500, a little less in trade. Does this seem high? These basses are not common down here in new mexico but doesn't the mod hurt the value more than this? Ideas...things to look for or common issues with this bass?? Will have pics soon. I have to travel to do this so I want to be prepared.

$1,500 is the going rate for a clean, all original '76P. To ask that much for a '76P with a routed body and non-original bridge and tuners is NUTS! That bass is worth at most $700. And don't be so sure that the extra pickup is a '63. Unless you can have someone in the know verify this, it probably isn't a '63.

I don't know why '70's Precisions aren't common in NMexico, but they are extremely common on the internet.

IF the bridge pickup is real, sell it and the p pickup, put in a set of replacement pickups, it already has replacement tuners and bridge so its already a players bass. That's the only way that I would do the deal

There are 69 & 67 jazz bass bridge pickups on Ebay currently selling for $330 & $250, so I'd imagine a 63 could go for write a bit more to the right buyer.
