I still listen to The Jam and The Modern World was the first album I ever got...I still think it is an amazing album!

Then, don't forget he sarcastically alluded to the villain thugs in "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" as being National Front types.
I was a fan from the get-go, first album, as there was all this stuff about this new trio conjuring up the early energetic Who. Granted, as time went on, strains of the Small Faces, Kinks(they rescued "David Watts" from obscurity), and The Beatles came through as Weller matured as a songwriter. Plus, Foxton was a revved-up engine on bass, and not an Entwistle clone, but just as active.

I never knew any of that stuff at the time....They were just another punk / New Wave band, and my favorite from the collection of bands we adored and went to see....so many
UK Subs, Wire, 999, Angelic Upstarts , The Saints, Vibrators, the Slits , etc etc and so many more creative and exciting bands....you know...Siouxsie and the Banshees...Gang of Four ...and the fabulous ...The Fall

Ironically, the roots of the band date back to 1972, and Weller discovered the "My Generation" album in '74. As I explained in my edit above, I caught the buildup about them, and noticed that they actually had a "clean" look, yes, very Mod, very mid-60's, which stood in contrast all the other ruffian bands, but while I indeed heard early Who influences, they definitely had their own energized thing going on(Buckler was precise, the antithesis of Moon). Loved the twin Rics(although intitially Foxton was playing an Ibanez knock-off)and the Vox AC-30's.

Now, even though they're somewhat obvious, but still genuine about it, there's the Molotovs.

No shade to the replacement drummers when I type that Zeppelin did it correctly and The Who ought to have changed the name of the band after Moon died. Even if they didn't that time, it's not the Who without Entwistle.

The Who ceased to be relevant when Moon died.

Wasn't their first farewell tour in '85?

They were never anything but a R&R band anyway, so I don't see how relevance is relevant. They are just making entertainment for people, or we could really streeeetch it and say art.
