1977 Traynor YT-1500 2x15 restoration/customization

Here is my latest purchase. A 1977 Traynor YT-1500 2x15 cab. As you can see from the pics, it has been well used over the last almost 40 years with a lot of dings and torn tolex with moisture damage on the bottom side. I will be completely stripping it down, fixing the damage and restoring it, but also adding a more modern twist with Traynors more current look in mind. The next pics to follow will be the stripping of the Tolex.

As I already knew, stripping the tolex revealed some nasty moisture damaged/rotted wood.

After starting to add body filler to areas that were damaged, I quickly started to realize that there was going to be more work to repair the damage than just filler. I started adding 1/4" top layer of wood to tie into the damaged wood, using liquid nail and screws to permanently secure it to the cab.

After letting the liquid nail cure, the next step was to get all the damaged areas as well as dents and holes filled. The worst areas I used a combination of wood glue and sawdust. I packed it in and let it set. Once it was cured, I began the long process of sanding. After the sanding, any minor voids that remained were filled with wood filler and sanded flush. I also at this point decided that I was going to change the appearance to flow with a more modern Traynor cab. I decided to leave the old chrome and black bumper off.

The shear weight of this cab was reason enough for me to decide to add extra handles from what was originally offered. How people were able to tranport and move these things around with the handles that were on this is a wonder. There was nothing to grab on to the sides with. It was defineltly a two man job to transport this thing around.

After the handles were in place and the damage to the outer shell was repaired, it was time to tackle the face plate. The speakers had been previously removed prior to doing any of the repairs. They area really nice pair of Celestiion g15-150. I decided to thicken up the 3/4" trim, and made it 1 1/2". In doing so it will require a new grill plate to be made. This is fine as the old face plate was well worn and warped. I decided to paint the face plate white to match the orange head that will be used with this.

After the handles were in place and the damage to the outer shell was repaired, it was time to tackle the face plate. The speakers had been previously removed prior to doing any of the repairs. They are a really nice pair of Celestion g15-150. The wiring was looking pretty shady, so I replaced it with heavy gauge wire and accessories. The new grill plate was made to compensate the smaller opening after increasing the trim thickness. I ordered authentic Traynor beige and black grill cloth. I also ordered a new Traynor name plate. I also decided to attach the original I'd plate which had been located on the back of the cab, to the inside of the grill plate.

I decided to replace the old kick plate on the back with diamond plate. I also added the original name plate to the back of the cab. The only thing left to do is add new Tolex or the Duratex cab paint tinted orange to match the head.
