1980 Rickenbacker 4001

Not really. They're different. Personally, I would be glad to own either, but the 4001 will have POTENTIALLY more problems . . . there are people who have never had a single issue with their 4001 basses, and there are people who have had the necks go wacko. It all depends, but usually, if you know how to adjust the trussrod right, you won't have problems. Also, as far as pickups go, it really just depends on if you want the newer, hotter pickups, or the older, less hot pickups. They sound VERY similar, but they do have noticeable differences.

If you were to ask me, I'd say get a new 4003. They have a more stable trussrod system, they have walnut headstock wings, they have the "Vintage Tone Selector" which is just a switch that turns the treble pickup cap on and off, and they only cost like $1000-$1200. However, just go and play some and decide.
