1981 Ric 4003 fire Glo

I have a 1981 Ric 4003 fire Glo that an acquaintance is trying to sell me. I like the bass because of its different sound as compared to my TRBPII5. Not sure if I want to buy. He was looking for $1200. I told him that was high. I thought more along the $750 range. Any thoughts from you RIC guys out there. Is there a Market for the Bass? Is it wanted by many? Looks like it would be more wanted if it was a 70's 4001. Enlighten me please.

X2. $1200 is a pretty fair price.
And yes, Rickenbackers are very desirable basses. Some years are more collectible and valuable than others.

if it's in really good condition he gave you a fair price. UNless there's a bunch of paint rubbed out and a bad truss, you're lowballing him.

Most used Ric's go in the $1200-$1600 range.

There are a few in a local shop that are much more. Granted I think they are overpriced, but someone will buy them.
a 2000 for...$2000
a 1977 for $2300

It's still worth much more than $1200 .

The early 4003 basses have the same old style spring rods as the 4001 but they are adjusted at the body rather than at the headstock . Check to see if they are twisted down . An early 4003 will also have the .0047 cap so check to see if it's been bypassed . If it's there you might consider a bypass to open it up .

I prefer the 4001 basses from that period , but the early 4003 basses are fine machines .

Is it a 4001 or a 4003 ? They were both in production then . A 4001 will have a skunk stripe , the 4003 will have a two piece guard . The 4001 basses tend to fetch more than the early 4003 basses .

if i were the seller and you told me that $1200 was high, and offered $750, i'd tell you that i think you are high.

Sorry but, unless its really beat up, $900 is too low. If you can get it for that price, more power to you, but I bought an 88 for $1500 and a newer one for $1650. You will make some decent cash if you get it for $900 and then flip it.

He's lying... but everyone knows that the 4002 is the REAL bass. The 4003's are just cheap knock-offs... And, with no low-B to really make the instrument cool.

But, just to be a nice guy, I'll give him $550 to ease him of the pain and sorrow of having the wrong bass.
