1990 Ibanez SR1000 Wiring help

Well I've looked everywhere for several years and can't seem to find a correct schematic for the preamp and tone controls on this bass. I've had it since '92 but back then I really only played guitar and bought it just to have in the studio. Now 20 some years later I am a full time bass player and after refinishing and rewiring I've never seemed to get it to work correctly. So looking at it hanging on my wall for 2 years I need to get it back up and running at least to be a backup to my 2 year old SR1400E. These two play almost exactly alike and I love the feel of the SR.

I've been able to get it to play by bypassing the tone controls and removing the board from the volume pot all together. It's a 4 knob setup with a blend, volume, and treble and bass eq. I really would like to get it working like this again. Being active pickups I'm not sure how to go about inserting the treble and bass controls back in the mix. The tone I am getting from just the blend and volume is really quite good I just need to be able to shape it as I'm playing. Can I just pull the boards off the tone pots also and fit with caps and I could a passive bass or am I going about this all wrong. This bass with the PJ pickups has always had a bit more growl than the Nordstrand single coils I have in the 1400E and would love it to stay that way. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Iv'e seen several SR players in here and I'm hoping you can help me out.

Thanks,
Ken

EQ is part of the preamp circuit. You can't just throw pots and capacitors in and expect bass and treble controls. The closet you could get would be passive tone and bass cut controls, but they will not behave the same way that they do in passive basses, because the pickup coils are buffered.

I couldn't find a wiring diagram yet for 1990 SR1000, still looking.

Is this close to what you have, except for the EMG's?:

the lighter blue SR1000 is exactly what I have with the EMG pickups. This ad is the only thing I have been able to find for quite a while. The schematics they show have a connection block or box that I don't have. Each of the three single pots have a small board hooked to it.

Also, the schematic list provided by Ibanez only goes back to '94 mine is a 1990.

What other option do I have? The EQ and preamp have had issues for some time and I can't find any schematic or circuit diagram that even resembles it. This bass was my no 1 until about 2 years ago when it quit working. The frustrating thing is it is probably just a simple connection that I have misplaced but I have no way to tell.

Swapping knobs won't fix a preamp problem. Are the knobs loose? Do they crackle? No sound at all is not going to be a knob problem most of the time.

Might help to post pics, some folks can spot issues like this at a glance.

Also, have you considered just buying an after market preamp and swapping that in?

EMG and Aguilar both make an assortment of ones that come with schematics. Those or a Spector Tone Pump would probably all sound amazing in a SR1000.

Hi the bass you have has a Ibanez BII eq preamp..there was a enquiry about a schematic for this on the Ibanez Soundgear forum a few years ago but the forum seems to be down at moment..i got a heap of Ibanez stuff in a folder and ive found a schematic but im not sure if its the right one as I haven't named it

Hopefully this is the one..if I find anything else ill post it on here..

Photo is close to diagram, but photo shows red/hot wires going to pickups-
do you have the 'Lo-Z' pickups, or are they passive?
According to the catalog, these are EMG pickups- maybe EMG preamp, also.

From Ibanez forum: "the Ibanez eqBII and the EMG BT eq are both surface mount in that each eq pot has a small board mounted on the side of the ..."

re: "There is no shielding in those basses? Odd."-
Ibanez humbucking, active pickups/electronics aren't noisy like some passives.

Hi the pic above was posted on Talk bass by a member who has a stock SR1500 with EMG pick ups..he took the back off and took the pic for me..I have a SR800 which had Ibanez LO Z active pick ups and I have fitted EMG pick ups and it works fine..the pre amp I have is identical the one In the pic above..what you have to watch out for with SR1000E's is the first ones came out with a Powercurve eq system with psssive Ibanez USA pick ups which are Dimarzio PJ made under license for Ibanez..then in the early 90's they changed to EMG PJ with the BII eq like your bass..not long after that the model was discontinued along with the SR1500 with EMG's also..the only difference between the SR1000E was that the SR1500 had a Bubinga body..i played one with the Ibanez USA PJ and powercurve eq in a shop here in Sydney in the mid 90's and it was a great bass..should have snapped that one up

Thanks a lot lesliegl. This looks very much like the system I have as well as the 1500 pic. The only thing I see is that they have no power going to the pickups in the schematics but they appear to be there in the pic of the control cavity.

I have the EMG active pickups and I believe I looked up the serial # and it was a 1990. I am not in front of it at there moment so I'm going from memory.

The BII preamps came in several 'flavors', to fit differing pickups they were matched with.
If you have active pickups (only checking the wires will verify this), then you'd need a BII (or EMG) preamp configured for those for best results, I'd think.
Only photos of relevent preamps will help determine if the pres that Ibanez installed in those were maybe EMG's in some, or 'cloned' EMG's 'til they
made their own take on it.
If your bass originally came with EMG pickups, as the catalog shows for 1990, then there's a good chance it may have an EMG pre in it also-
most (if not all) were 2 band then.
It's also not easy finding info on EMG model/preamps from that period, either. I have a couple models that I'm unsure of the Model #/ designation.

Ok so I took some pics of the preamp boards and made a line drawing of the main board so the traces could be followed. Please excuse my Illustrator skills, it's been a while.

I have the 20k pots removed from the boards. I downloaded the data sheet on the dual op amp and included the pinout.

The drawings from Ibanez show wires going to and from but the don't say exactly where they attach.

Hi very impressive drawing..I think if you have board probs it would be best to fit a suitable EMG BT pre amp..when I had my BII refitted not long ago I asked the tech how he went with it and he said he had to do some rewiring as the pre being from a 1987 bass the connections were getting brittle...

If my BII pre wasn't going to work that was the option I was gong for..it would be straight forward as the set up with boards on the pots is the same so It would fit...the guy that owned the SR1500 his BII pre was playing up so sounds like it's a passage of time thing..if mine goes downhill I'll fit the above BTS system pre..only thing is I won't be able to fit the Ibanez rubber knobs as they don't fit the EMG shafts
