First riffs were "Doctor Doctor" - UFO and "Running Free" - Iron Maiden, but the first song I learnt end to end, warts and all was "The Prisoner", another Maiden tune.
"Smoke On The Water", "25 or 6 to 4" and "Rocky Mountain Way" were probably the first things I slugged through.
The set list for my first gig in high school was:
"Supernova" - an "original" instrumental that began with a melodic intro we'd start playing off stage and walk in to.
Zeppelin's "The Ocean" - I doubt I ever got through the verses cleanly.
Rush's "Bastille Day" - Didn't even attempt the fills leading into the first verse.
started out like most by just jamming along with my favorite songs. I was ready to give up the guitar but it all turned around for me one day when I was jamming some leads to "Spoonful" by Cream.
30+ years later and hardly ever miss a day of playing my bass and/or electric guitar.
"Breathe" by Pink Floyd. Simple enough, although it took quite a while to get all the chorus chords right. Heck, it took a little while to get the E's in the right octave, instead of playing the open E.
On the Christmas day I got my first bass and my brother Ted got his first drum kit, we both sat down and tried to learn the whole Police - Synchronicity album. So probably one of those songs.
Heard It Through The Grapevine and Stand By Me were the first songs I remember learning. The first complicated riff I learned was Money by Pink Floyd. I don't even like Pink Floyd...
