Tried out a Goliath IV with my SWR350 the other day but just wondered if something might be missing, or maybe it's just that I'm used to my 1x15. Thought about just adding a 2x10 to my 1x15 rather than going for the 4x10, thinking that this will give me the punch of the 10s but the bottom end of the 15 and more portability too, but it seems that not many are going for this combination, why is that?

1x15 + 2x10 versus 4x10

4x10's will play as loud and as deep as 1x15-2x10's. They are 2 different systems and speak with 2 different voices.
I bi-amp separately to 4x10 and 1x15 cabs.
I sometimes run the 10s alone..but I miss the booming lows of the 15. If I run the 15 alone, I lose the crisp clarity of the 10s.
I give a thumbs up to the 10 and 15 combo.

I use a 115 + 210 setup with my SVT2 PRo. Absolutely LOVE it. it is exactly as you described; tons of bass with just enough punch.
Actually, a lot more people these days are going for that combination. The 2x10"/1x15" rig seems to work well in conjunction with each other, where the 15" gives it a low end kick while the 2x10" takes care of everything else. I still like a good 4x10" cab, but I'll take a 2x10"/1x15" rig any day over a single 4x10".
I will play with just 10's sometimes, but for me the 115/210 combination is the best overall solution.

2x10 1x15 - If you like it do it - I always hear mess of different frequencies, sound travelling etc. with combination of 10s and 15s . use strong reliable amp with good EQ and you ll have punch,clarity and bottom with one 4x10 cab

There are very few, if any, 115's that have the SPL, power and punch and low end of a good quality 410.... that would be a misbalance to me in most cases.
IMO, the 115/210 stack made a lot of sense way back in the day when many of the 115 cabs were top end constrained, and many of the early 210 cabs were thin and nasally. This is not the case today IMO and IME.
That being said, every cab and every cab combination sounds different. I prefer the ease of a large 1 cab solution, and you don't deal with different SPL/balancing issues, etc. Pure personal taste there.
However, don't think that a 115/210 rig will have more bottom or volume than a 410... it might, it might not, depending on the brand/design, etc.
On a side not, if the Goliath IV you tried was an 8ohm cab, that would explain it right there. Since the 350x is a low powered head (and sounds even lower power to me than its spec suggests) running that head at 8ohms results in VERY little power going into that Goliath.
Assuming that all cabs involved are of equal quality, absolutely. First off, I'm a huge fan of the vertical stack, so you can take a 15" and a 2x10" and line up all the drivers on axis, and second, a 15" and a 2x10" will fit in a car along with my upright, whereas a 15" and a 4x10" is more difficult to fit.
I couldn't fit the 4x10 in the new Corolla, so I got a second 2x10 to give me a similar speaker setup that would squeeze into the car. If I had found a good 1x15 first, I probably would have used that with my 2x10 - I think that pairing can sound great as long as the two cabs get along with each other.
I used to favor an Eden 115XLT and 210XST, and now I like my Aguilar DB115 and DB210. Something about the combo sound I really dig over the 410 options. Yeah, if I take both cabs for a loud gig, then it's more to move and carry. But for the smaller gigs, that Aguilar DB115 sounds fantastic by itself and I win on weight and size over the 410.
I play flatwounds on my P bass and 4001, and prefer the "old school" sound myself. This setup is perfect for me.
