1x18 Cabinet

this thread is about the 18"! bigger is better. i like the 'slow drag' and effort the amp has to put in for the 18 to crush. chandeliers swing when i pump my 1x18

Your post is nonsensical. Larger drivers move at tha same speed as smaller ones. They have larger motors. "effor the amp has to put in for the 18 to crush" sounds like an inefficient driver. So you want to eat up your head room pushing a driver hard to get to a usable volume?

Screw chandeliers swinging. I can make the whole standing structure move with my 15's. That isnt due to the size of the speakers, but rather the fact that each 15 has about the same displacement as a 610.

It is different from W-Horns in that you not only get excellent lows, but you can hear yourself on stage..not necessarily so with W-HORNS. I have taken mine up to high D# on G String..no loss of reasonable highs. Never used mine below a low B..ALL LOUD AND CLEAR.

As this cab was built in mid 1970's, it is heavy in weight and much heavier in sound than any cab I have ever heard.

I was asked not to use that cab in a club once, when the throat was 'aimed' toward tables; fear of moving glasses onto laps of patrons. I assured the sound guy that the cab would be used for tone; not volume..show went on..sounded great as always..

Also, you can turn a horn-loaded cab to face a corner. Sound will couple with the whole room..AMAZING....You will never get that with any 4-10's.

I highly recommend 18's for bass, but even better.. use your ears first as they will defy and decry ' physics' of any design, and wallet gets the veto.

You seem to have a limited grasp of how bass amplification works. Stop listening with your eyes and use your ears and what is between them.

Yeah. Ignore those kool-aid-drinking, laws-of-physics-understanding folks and their crazy ideas about how the universe works ...

a 4x10 will have more surface area than an 18" speaker and can easily push more air. A single 18" speaker has only 80% of the surface area as a 410. (for the same Xmax)

Yet they roll off at 60-70Hz, for example the ampeg svt 810. Why can't they go lower if they have soooo much area? Because surface radiating area is only one part of low-frequency reproduction. The real story about low-end rolloff is told by the speakers Thiele-Small parameters. Those two guys racked their brains for decades to come up with their published works so we could do just that---determine how the low end behaves.

A 410 has ~1240cm^2, where as a single 18 is about ~1140cm^2. That's more like ~90%, not 80% like you had thought.

Even so, show me a 410 that can move more air than this...

That isnt a full range driver, and it has crappy sensitivity. So you could be louder will less power with a 15.

Not at the fundamental of a G#, which is 20-something Hz. I know it isn't full range, but when trying to reproduce true sub-bass, something has to give. The region where the OP tunes at, it's no longer about sensitivity, that gets thrown out the window unless you're doing a room-sized FLH enclosure--raw SPL is accounted for with raw (lots) of power. The proper speaker in the proper enclosure dictates the low-end rolloff, then amplifier power will shift it up to as loud as you can afford. It's not the cheapest way to do this, but at 20-something Hz, you dont have many other options.
