2/147th Assault Helicopter Battalion

So, today my brother-in-law left for training and then Iraq. He's a crew chief on a Black Hawk. Quite an amazing site to see, the kid I've known since he was 10, is now 21 and in a Black Hawk. We are all very proud of him, but, obviously, at the same time very concerned for his safety. We are all very close, so the next 18 months will be very different for all of us.

I know there must be others with loved ones in Iraq, or are there themselves. I just wanted to say "thank you" to all who serve and the families that serve right along side their loved ones.

Balad is called "Moraritaville" because of the insurgents who try to lob mortars into the compound to hit something. They miss the vast majority of time, and if they were at the mortar location when it launched - they're dead because we've gotten so good at tracking where mortars come from. Good luck to your brother, Blackhawks were the best ride I had when I was there, too!

We will also be going with your brother-in-law over there as the MEDEVAC Unit and I run the Maintenance Support Section Co. D 2-238th, have him look me up. PM me with his name and I'll be sure to link up with him at Sill and get him set up on the TalkBass. I not sure we will be at the same bases in Iraq as our missions are different. We will be in Ft. Sill very soon. Below is an article from the local newspaper.
I got his back and will help him as I can over there.

Indianapolis - An Indiana National Guard unit out of Shelbyville found out they are being mobilized for active duty.

The 2nd Battalion, 238th General Support Aviation consists of 140 soldiers. They will support the military's efforts in what it refers to as the "global war on terrorism."

A press release issued the following information about the soldiers:

Company C is a Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) unit. Their mission is to provide medical care and evacuation across the battle field. Pilots, crew chiefs, flight medics, flight operation specialists, and supply soldiers make up this unit.

Company D is an Aviation Unit Level Maintenance (AVUM) unit. Their mission is to provide scheduled and unscheduled UH-60 maintenance in a battlefield environment. Blackhawk helicopter mechanics, structural repairers, avionics repairers, and power plant repairers are some of the specialties in this unit.

The soldiers will report to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for mobilization.

Good luck to your brother-in-law and your family. My prayers are with you all.

The guys from the 1/221 aviation in Panama pulled me out of a few scrapes while I was there. Come to think of it, they put me in a few too....those BA@#!&DS!:D

stedtale: God's Speed to your brother in law!

My nephew was a medic in Afganistan for 18 months....he got back about a year ago....was a tough tour and we thought about him often.....

make sure to send him "homey" stuff (i.e. candy, books, dvds, cards etc)....my nephew said that is what kept him sane...we even sent a box of books our family had already read so that he could pass them around camp...they were most welcomed.

love them Blackhawks!
