I came across an interesting technique with water soluble aniline dyes and was wondering if anyone here (or in the general lutherie community) has tried something like it. Trifern writes the blog as though the look is easy to achieve. However my attempts, so far, haven't displayed the same "crispness" as shown in Trifern's turnings. I know there is some little process I'm missing. I'll post a pic of my best attempt in a bit.

Actually that is just about exactly what I'm doing with a bass I'm building right now. It will be brown but I'm starting with black then sanding most of it off, then purple and sanding most of it off, then brown. Then KTM-9 clearcoat.

I believe this video is a similar process of using darker colors, sanding, then using the lighter colors.

That burst isn't anywhere near as dramatic.

I laughed when I saw James Condino, he is quite the luthier, and nice guy too. He does many things with wood, and that greenburst came out beautifully. That second urn has a lot of color going on, and is a completely different type of finish than the greenburst. The 2nd urn is done with a swatching technique where you use multiple colors over the initial padding instead of one color at a time.
