2000RB is DYING!!

I had the exact same rig 3 or 4 years ago...(RB2000 / Acme Low B4 - 8 ohms). At some point, the head started to "fart" and "spit" and go into protect mode and what not.

A call to GK's service department pointed out the fact that my early production model RB2000 had only one cooling fan over the internal heatsink fins... and the GK service rep on the phone said that since I had purchased mine, they had decided to go with two heatsink fans. He then proceded to point out to me the fact that connections for this second fan already existed on the chassis.

Therefore, a simple fix to alleviate what (in my case) was a simple thermal problem. Check your amp to see whether there are one or two cooling fans in there.

PS... Getting my amp back from GK Service DID take longer than I would've expected for an otherwise upstanding corporate entity... but, hey... that GK/Acme rig was worth the wait.

Dude, Lets get together and figure out a new rig for me!

Here I took the liberty to figure out your new rig.

New Acme low B-2

Thats 1269.00 for these components. Add your Acme B-4 and run the amp in bridge mono (1200 watts) You will be knocking walls down.

Thank You. I have questions in no logical order..

Ok. I guess I really don't understand how to work power amps.
How can I bridge the amp if I was going to hook up TWO Acme cabs? Is'nt Bridging the amp involving only ONE cabinet? Do you just put the switch on bridge mode and hook up both cabs?

This may not be related but I was reading some info on crown amps and it says that you can hook up cabs of different impendance (4 or 8ohms)at the same time. Does that also work in bridge mode?
For example the Crown xs500:
Per channel = 4ohms@500 watts/8ohms@400 watts//
Bridge = 1600 watts@4ohms/1450 watts@8ohms//
If I hooked up two cabinets and ran the amp in bridge mode, would that be the wattage PER CABINET, OR is it the maximum wattage split in two?
By the way, two 8ohm Cabs will draw a 4ohm load from the amp correct? So in the case of the Crown Xs500 w/1600 watts@4ohms, Two 8ohm Cabs would be running 1600 watts total right?

I do not have any experience with power amps. Ive been looking at different amps and reading old Threads trying to figure out what would be the best way to go. I was thinking either Stewart World 2.1 or Crown just because they are popular amps.

With another B2 8ohm, will I friggin pound?
(in bridge mode?)

Thank You !!!!!!!!!

Hi guys, Sorry to be so late to the party. Holidays and all. I suspect your amp needs the second fan added to it. The office is shut down until the 5th so I can't do anything until then, but get in touch with me then, and I should be able to help you. I believe Trip already sent you the # for the bat phone.

Sorry if you guys have experienced delays in service. I've been lobbying for a dedicated tech support guy to help resolve that. The next trick is finding an actual bass player that's not a frustrated guitarist with some technical background that lives in the area...

"Is that you Al..."

SHEEESH!!!

OK... for everyone else; amorosomolto is the person who has ended up as the 3rd owner of my ex-beloved RB2000. His Acme Low B4 was also mine.:bawl:

I suspect (as I think amorosomolto does) that owner #2 did some dastardly abusing to this amp. Since it is (was) my amp, it already has the 2nd fan, SO...

...let's let Mr. Gallien-Krueger ServiceMan Daniel Elliot take it from here!

SHEEESH!!!

Well,
The 2000RB is fixed! If I remember correctly, they changed 2 pots, two of them were volume pots I think.

They changed two trans-lucters? Something like that. Trans- something rather..

They changed something else too. It was pretty much TWO of everything they changed. I cant remember what they were. They told me over the phone, but I forgot already. I belive they might have changed the Instrument input.

I shipped it Jan. 8th and a week later I called Dan Elliot to see what was up. He said he had just gotten back from NAMM and he would check the status. He called me back and said that it was already fixed, and that they would call me for the shipping information.

4 days later or so I called and gave them my shipping info. It should be here this week. I have not recieved it yet so I will post an update soon for you and everyone else here. I hope it works.

Dan Elliot was totally cool by the way.

Mike

That's a problem I'm still trying to resolve. The techs work fast, but we're severly shorthanded in the office so the paperwork doesn't get done in a timely manner. We have a couple of new people starting this month so that should help. Sorry about the delay in getting your amp shipped back to you.

Dan, with all due respect, when a person gigs with an amp that needs a warranty repair, time "lying around the shop" just waiting to be shipped back causes the gigging musician ulcers. Sounds like the same problem I had getting mine returned a few years ago. I was given shipping assurances for weeks.

What is the operating procedure or policies of GK when a warranty repair has been physically completed? A bit strange to hear that "someone will call him for shipping information" then to have him have to call back himself after four more days. Return shipping info should be on file or tagged to the unit? I'm just curious about how the operating procedure is with a company of this size. Thanks.

In this case it was not a warranty repair, but still it shouldn't take more than a day to process the paperwork. As I said before I'm working on resolving this issue. It takes a great deal of time and effort to convince the pencil pushers of anything. I'm sure that's true of most companies. In this case, we just simply need a couple more people in the office. I've managed to get that approved so now we're in the interviewing process. We'd like our customer service guy to be a bass player organized and prompt if at all possible. That makes the search much more difficult. How many organized, prompt bass players do you know ?:hmm:

Michael's amp is definitely going out today though. I made sure of that.

Dan,

I am not at all dissapointed with the amount of time the amp has taken to arrive.

I was actually very impressed that you took time out to help me even though the amp was on its third owner. That alone tells me that you stand by your product and you are willing to maintain that level of service.

My credit card has been charged and I am more than sure that the amp has already gone out.

The amp will arrive and I am confident that everything will be just fine.

I will post a new thread soon!!!!

THANKS DAN!!!! :bassist:

Yeah, as the first owner of Mike's amp I second his opinion about the quality of GK's Customer Service. A big Thumbs Up! :D

The only drawback in my instance was the turnaround after repairs were complete. But that situation sounds well on its way to being resolved.

Darn... if I lived in the area, I'd be standing in line for one of those positions at GK. Why, I'm even bi-lingual! Ain't that right Mike?

Oh well. :hmm:
