2006 Wall Calendar

I'd like to get the ball rolling on this sometime in the next couple weeks. Does anyone have any input on what resolution we should set as a ballpark minimum? Keep in mind that it these images will eventually have to be resized and resampled to fill most of an 11" by 8.5" sheet.

I'm guessing it would have to be atleast 1280X1024 to keep the high resolution intact. A 5 megapixel camera will shoot 2592X1944.

I just received my calendar from cafepress.com. The calendar itself is made from a fairly heavy weight stock of glossy paper. It is not spiral bound. It consists of 7 11X17 sheets folded & stapled in the middle. The picture quality is horrible. All the edges & strings on the basses look digitized. I have to believe this is because of the resolution the pictures were taken at, and not directly related to the quality of product from cafepress.com. I'm guessing they were taken at 1024X768. I just got off the phone with them, and they issued me a refund, and told me to keep the calendar. I think if we go through with this the pics will need to be very high resolution. 5 megapixels at minimum.

Paul- If you want I can mail you the calendar so you can take a look. I won't be hanging it up anywhere.

Just an idea to toss into the mix. In order to assuage fears of upsetting luthiers, why not give them the opportunity to put together a showcase of their work. Each luthier gets to design one page showing their best stuff, their most interesting stuff, their ugliest stuff, whatever. Then the TB general population gets to vote on their favourite 12 submissions and those go into the calendar. This would effectively put the onus on the luthier to put together something that the people will like while removing any questions about image rights (since they'll be taking pictures of their own work).

The main problem that I forsee is getting notoriously busy luthiers to invest the time required to make a nice looking product. On the other hand, free advertising from a winning submission might be enough of an incentive.

What're the odds that we could find at least 12 high end builders willing to compete? If things work out, I can forsee an annual competition with bragging rights on the line and (my personal preference) proceeds going to charity.

Wow, that's dissapointing Tbone. That really puts some doubts into my mind about pulling this off. Some of these companies also do 6 X 6 calendar pages. That is rather small, but I don't want to end up with what tbone just described. I would love to have a full size calendar but I think gettiing good pics at that kind of resolution is going to be challenge.

Well, maybe we have to go at this a little more professional. Browntrout Publishing makes all sorts of picture calendars. I went to their website, and they will accept photos, as long as they are done by a professional photographer. Maybe if we get Paul talking with them, they could set up some sort of corporate thingy where we get our basses photographed, sent to them for their magic calendar-ing process, then we sell them or something. i could do this using iPhoto as it has a calendar creation feature. i have made a hardcover book with it and it turned out pretty nice.

as you can see, these would cost $20 each. i havent done any research yet to see if they offer bulk discounts though.

pics would need to be as high res as possible. we're talking atleast 200dpi and preferrably in a non compressed file format.

another possible drawback, though minor, is that on the very last page or on the back there would be a "Made On A Mac" phrase written about an 1" in size.

i believe the new version of photoshop has this facility too but i have never used it.
