2013 Fender American Precision, what to do......

I did ask them and they won't take anymore off. They are willing to ship me out a 2016 model, but they don't offer blue any longer.

Match point. Time to make a decision.

I make it a point to return anything that's not exactly what I ordered unless it's something I unexpectedly liked a lot better - or they contacted me first.

In your case, if you don't like the new colors they offer for a 2016, I'd just ask for a full credit - including shipping both ways since it was their error and not yours - and if they balked, I'd go through my card company to get it taken care of if it's that important to you. You'll burn your bridges with the seller probably, but that's the way it goes if you get super heavy with most people. Like I said: match point!

If it were me, and I liked the way it played and sounded, I'd probably keep it and just ask them to swap the case for the one I ordered. That shouldn't pose a problem for them. But I don't buy anything with an eye on reselling. If I get something, it's always with the intention to play and keep it, so it's a lot easier for me than it is for some people.

Luck!

I have the same bass as Dp1363. I'm so dumb that I didn't know that the first two digits of the serial# was the year of manufacture. So I wasn't aware that I had a 2013 model until I read this post. I was indifferent to the color initially. but have come to like the mystic blue. I received the tolex case which I like. Mostly I got a great sounding, easy playing bass for a price I couldn't turn down. So although she's three years older than I realized, I think I'll keep her.

Depends on what's more important to you… the resale price (MIA will still command a fair selling price, especially a discontinued color for the model) or the overall look and feel for the instrument. To me it's a no-brainer. I'd keep it. A few years mean nothing to me, especially if it's in brand new condition. Just swap the case. Maybe you could ask the dealer to compensate you a few bucks for the screw up; sending an older model when promised a 2015 or better? But if you're the type to buy and resell frequently then maybe you should just get the latest showroom model and see where that takes you.

I just bought a new Fender MIA P bass from a huge on line retailer. Only the mystic blue color was on sale at the time. When I looked on the Fender website I didn't see the mystic blue color currently being offered. I asked my sales rep to confirm I would be getting a current model, and he assured me it would be a 2016 or at least a 2015 model but he couldn't tell me which. I also asked him to make sure I also got the plastic case not Tolex.

Well....when I opened up the box, I got a 2013 model with a Tolex case. I called to complain and they agreed to make things right and swap to a 2016 model (although mystic blue is no longer offered from Fender) and exchange the Tolex for the plastic case.

However, I really the mystic blue color and the bass is brand new, and not a return. I could keep the bass and just swap out the case.

My question is if I get GAS and decide to sell it in a year, will I take a hit on the resale value because a buyer will see a 3+ year old bass even though it has little to no milage on it?

Should I just return everything and swap for the 2016 model?

From what I understand nothing has changed on MIA P basses from the 2012 model on.
The only hit you will take is mystic blue is not a common color like black, white or three tone sunburst

Thanks everyone for your input. This is my first P bass. I know that there comes a time in a man's life that he must accept the fact that he needs to own a P bass. That time has now come for me. Lol.

I have been tinkering with the set up a bit and the bass plays, and sounds great. At first I was leaning on returning it but I really do like the Mystic blue. I know a few of you mentioned that I shouldn't be thinking about resale now, but I learned a valuable GAS lesson three bass rigs ago lol. You never know when you might suddenly get bored of something.

As far as the Mystic blue I know it's not a popular color, that is why they had a sale on the blue color only. However, as I said the color is really striking in person it's a metallic blue flake.

If I do decide to send it back and get a 16' The current model colors are only black, Oly white and sunburst. Not sure I can do a sunburst, I have seen just too many of them out there.

Either way, I'm not a fan of the Tolex cases I have several plastic cases and found them to be invaluable when it comes to transporting to and from gigs. I had a Tolex case that got torn and looked like hell after a few years. Plus I don't like the hinges Fender uses on the Tolex cases.

I think they will take back the Tolex and let me swap it out. It's the least they can do.

I'm going to tweak the setup a bit more today, and give it a good workout for a few hours. If it continues to impress me I might just keep the '13 after all. They say with P basses you either a good one or a bad one so far this one has been stellar with regard to playability and sound.

Srsly...the relevant question is whether you like it or not. '13 vs '16 should make little or no diff to any prospective buyer. More important, the buyer you should be concerned with is not the next one, but you. If you like it, keep it and don't fret (yeah, I did that).

Looks like you got the same deal as me. It was $1,000. The price was good for MIA but knowing now that is was for a 13' model explains a lot. I am shocked too that there are that many still around from 3 years ago. I would have thought the inventory would had turned much faster on a popular bass.

This isnt a car where a few years older but the same body style can make it worth 20% or so less. On the used market the 2008+ USA fenders do net more then the earlier 2000's especially the S-1 models, but there is not that kind of difference between 2013 and 2016. I also dont know why someone would want the plastic case over the tolex cases. Plastic cases always crack and get their feet smashed into the interior of the case. Tolex/wood cases are a lot more durable in the long run.

A funky limited Blue is just going to be a hard sell with any traditional instrument. If you are so concerned about a easy future sale for the most money then you would want to get Sunburst.

You may not have had, or seen some of the latest Tolex cases that have their latches open with a minor impact.

You'd do better to just keep it. If you need to sell, it'll still retain the majority of its value, being an American Fender and all.

I'm glad I went for a discountinued model. I suspect there are a higher ratio of "players" in discontinued colors available used than in colors still in production. I always liked charcoal frost and was on the fence a little for some of the same reasons, but I'm very glad I went for it, because three American Standards later (and a few American RI's), it's hands down the best Precision or Fender that I've owned. Decent weight, amazing fret work, no severe deadspots or neck shim necessary and sets up like a dream. The better examples of the more popular colors tend not to easily find their way into the used market (because they're good!) while there are some stellar examples floating around in greater quantities of "less desirable" colors...that's my theory anyway.

2013... not a return...

Nope. Send it back. It IS a return. Who was the retailer? Let me guess: MF or GC on line, right?
