We have a saying around here "no pictures, no new bass!"

EDIT: Hold the phone, I see it here
NDB – Gollihiur Ed, not set up for Rockabilly

I'm glad you opted for Spirocore Mittels in the right way to start. You should leave them on there for 5 years while you're transitioning from BG.

Well, my new bass just arrived with a new set of S42s on it. Can I join in as a late entrant?

True enough - here's my new Gollihur Ed

I still remember my first set of spiros. They were given to me by a friend who had been gifted them by another friend who considered them “used up”. They were probably 10-15 years old at that point, and the silks were a hot mess. The moment that G string first went on, the whole gateway drug rabbit hole began.

I remember my first set of Spirocore ("reds") as well. I was using Superflexibles ("blues") because they were more affordable and had to save up for the Reds. I played on that set of Spirocores for probably 20 years and did not enjoy any of it. The reason I kept slogging away with them even tho I did not enjoy the sound at all, was because the Reds were supposed to be "the" jazz string to use.

So I thought I hated those strings -- but that bass was midrange-focused and did not like Spirocores at all. Wrong strings! But it took me 20 years discover that.

Now I have a bass that loves any gauge Spiro you put on it. And life is much better.

So this challenge of Troy's is not very challenging for me...

I just started playing upright in December. My rental bass had whatever default cheap strings it came with. My instructor (who used to work in repairs at that shop) told them to give me a proper set of new strings. So now as of 1/7 I technically switched to spirocores... does that count? :smug:
Dang it... after scrolling back through the thread and seeing the photos of red, I realized I must have misheard the shop guy, because mine aren't. Comparing colors at the tail and peg ends, I'm pretty sure I have Helicore. Guess I can't enter anyways. :bawl:

It doesn't matter that much, if you're just starting out. Just enjoy your bass and put your work and time in. Strings can be a distraction, which is why 20-someodd of us are trying to not look up for a year

Hmmm, pretty quiet out there...
I'd like to think it's because we're all too busy shedding! My practice sessions have been longer and more frequent since putting the spiros on. My dog has even resigned herself to settling down next to my left foot with a chew toy a few times this week.

You can join Christian McBride's club instead! I say play 'em til they're dead, and by then, it'll be a buyer's market for used Spiros here on TB.

If you want to be sure which strings you have, check the Gollihur website for pictures/graphics of string ends in their descriptions.
