2X10 or 1X12????

So I looking for a new amp set up, and I was originally planning on and Avatar Neo112 (250 watts at 4 ohms) and then some 250 watt head to go with it.

While looking for heads I stumbled across the Hartke LH500
(500 watts at 4 ohms).

That head interested me so now I'm considering the Hartke with and Avatar Neo2X10 (each speaker is rated at 250, so the total is 500 watts at 4 ohms).

I play a 5 string, and I'm looking to start playing a lot of hiphop, rap, soul, and rock.
I was originally thinking the 1X12 would do better with the lows, but now I'm wondering if the 2X10 with more power would have better lows at an equal or better volume.

What do people think?

I just bought a used Eden D210T cab from a TBer and it rocks for a 210. Now he pulled the stock drivers and dropped in a couple Em Deltalites II, its now a 500 watt 4 ohm cab as well. It still has that Eden flavor and when I played a house Christmas party using GK1001RBI (540 watts @ 4ohms) & my 55-02, wow it sounded amazing. Nice lows and full sounding. I owned a older Avatar B210, ceramic, and it was OK but did not make it stand alone back then in a band mix.

Now I used this same rig (Eden+GK) w/Peavey Cirrus 5 at a bar gig and it was OK but did not seem to fill the room like it did at this large gameroom at that house. I sorta attribute that to the way I set my Cirrus eq though.

So Im thinking to add a Avatar neo 210 or I'd really prefer the Eden 210XST, Avatar is less pricey and I've read good things about it but I'd love to hear that XST cab. I like my cabs in 4 ohms, so I will either use my GBE750 or B1500 heads with 2 cabs or I just found my old series box a amptech made me a few years ago to still use the GK head with 2, 4 ohm cabs. Regardless, I planned to buy a 410 soon so looks like it will be 2x210 cabs instead. But Ive yet to try this new-to-me Eden cab with one of my GB Neox212T cabs, could work better instead of another 210, esp since I already own those 212 cabs. Good luck, keep us posted. Oh, I almost went with a 1x12 cab but felt the 210 offers more, in the pricepoints I was shopping that is.

From a pure volume perspective, definitely, the 210's are the way to go (versus a 112). But I find most 210's be too "boxy" sounding, and dialed in way too low mid heavy (but not all). I'll take a 212 over the 210 everytime. And if the volume requirements of the venue allow for it, I'll take the 112.

To my ear, 10's don't start to shine until you're pushing 4 of them.

(edit - this is all generally speaking, of course. There are some phenominal cabs out there in various configs that shatter the "general" preconcieved notions.)

+1 with ljazz. A single 210 cab or a single 112 cab has never worked for me and I've tried to make them work in a live band. If your gonna go 10's, go with two 210 cabs. If your gonna go 12's, (my fav), go with a 212 cab.
IMHO, the only way a 210 works is in a practice or "very" moderate volume gig where all you need is monitor from your cab.

+1 I used to use a 410 that I loved, then I tried various 210s but none of them filled out the sound in a live situation the way that 4 10 inch speakers can.

right now I'm using to Aguilar GS112s and I prefer the depth of my current tone to the 410 config.

I would try a 2x12 before you settle on any of the above.

You are allowed to disagree, it won't however change my opinion on any mfg's 112 cab ;)
Any single driver cab (with the acception of a 118) to my ears has a very distinguished tone to them that just drives me nuts. A single 110, a single 112 and even most single 115 just have a certain sound to them that just turns me off.
They all seem fine at low volumes but once they start getting pushed they ALL sound awfull to my ears.

Now, a 212 cab is whole different story:D
I still feel a 212 cab is the best you can get for a bass cabinet. And there are plenty of good ones out there to choose from:hyper:
