2x12 cab for ROCK!

Almost every cabinet manufacturer now makes a 212, it just depends on what you want to spend.
Accgroove's come in around $2,000.00.
Berg's, Eden's, Genz-Benz, Schroeder, Mesa, roughfully between $900.00 to $1,200.00 +.
Probably the best "value to quality" 212 would be Avatar's 212 Neo cabinet, $389.00 plus shipping.
Depending on the volume levels your playing at and how hard a hittin' drummer your working with a single 212 may or may not be enough.
I'd suggest thinking about two 212 cabs in 8 ohms, then you can run one cab at rehearsals/small gigs, both cabs when you need more coverage and volume.

Another vote for the NEOX-212T. I've used one for years in my hard rock bands. Fantastic cabs.
The single best cabinet I have ever played/owned was the Epifani T-212D (NYC ceramic magnet version). I used it with a five string doing 80s rock covers...took anything I threw at it. Obviously any cabinet should be evaluated on its own rather than making generalizations on speaker size, but there is no reason why a good 2x12 couldn't do rock.
I've been using a 4ohm Gallien-Krueger Neo 212-II with my mb500 head on my rock gigs lately but can't say it's turning out as I hoped. Before that I was using basically a homemade 115 cab with a rear port, and believe it or not my bandmates liked that sound better. They state now they can't feel the bottom with my new equipment as they did with my old crappy stuff.
I have a neo 412 cab and 2001rb for my larger gigs and I used it last night and it is the best rig I've ever gigged as far as sound, I thought the 212 would be a great alternative to this at the smaller gigs with lower volume but it doesn't seem to be turning out that way.

Check out the Orange SP212. It's 8 ohm but if you use the Orange Bass Terror amp, with an output switchable between 4 ohm and 8 ohm for the 500W version, you can get the full 500W into the one speaker cab, which is rated at 600W power handling. The thing I love about most Orange bass cabs is the front facing port, which give better sound projection. Many compact cabs use rear ports and my experience of these is that the sound gets lost in larger/open air/marquis type venues. The other thing I love about the Orange SP range is the compactness and low weight for such high sound power spec.
I won't tell you what's best, but I will say I play rock and use a GB shuttle 6.0 and a Mesa Powerhouse 212 cab and everyone in the band likes it over my Ampeg rig.
Love my 2 Aguilar GS112s to death personally, also with a Terror Bass amp. Portable and very kick ass.
