2x15?

I think yes. Others think no. Still others don't think. What is your aim- big band, reggae, trad jazz, polka..?
I ran a Sunn Collesium 300+Peavey 2x15- the deeper one- in a punk/sloppy garage/classic rock/little bit of ska band for years. Thumb BO-4, DOD Milkbox comp & I was as happy as a pig in s**t. Mind you I was young, dumb & didn't mind schlepping that monster. Wouldn't think of it now.
I love the 2x15. Back when I was younger/starting the 2x15 was the default big bass cab, and perhaps the sound of a good one has defined what a good cab sounds like to my ears. Yes or no, it's still my preference, although now I use 2 1x15s to spare my rickety back the lift.

I would recommend getting separate 1x15 cabs so you can accommodate the room you are in, and to save your back for rooms that a 2x15 is just too much anyway.
I run 2-2x15" cabs. It's sound is nothing less than rock and roll. Add a little preamp gain or a fuzz pedal and things get interesting. I'll also add, no tweeters. I don't like 'em.

No. Compared to a rig that reproduces midrange well, it'll sound muffled/constricted, unless you're using fifteens that go way up into the midrange but that type of fifteen won't be very capable in the bass region so that's not what you want. With enough mid/treble boost you can sort of get there, but it's not the same. Also the frequencies up in that range will beam like crazy coming out of a fifteen. Not everyone will be standing right in front of your cab, though with PA support that's not a concern.
Instead, consider a cab that has a fifteen crossed over to a midrange (NOT to a &#@$%^ tweeter
) but make sure the midrange is acoustically isolated from the rest of the cab. Or consider a biamp setup: preamp to active crossover to stereo power amp to 2 cabs (one w/ 15s for bass, the other w/ 8s or 10s for mids, for example).

I like 215s as much as anyone, but think they're typically more suited to classic rock, blues, and country - and that 10s are typically more funk/slap friendly...
