3 Bass Limit

If for some reason you were only allowed 3 basses, what would your 3 be and why?

I only have 3. Basically the Sire V7 takes care of having a J bass. The Sub Ray which is modded with pup and pre, takes care of another iconic bass tone, my Lakland 44-01 again modded with a custom Audere pre that is no longer available combined with the Nordstrand Big singles is never going anywhere. I have to say three is a hard number. Ideal for me would be 4 or 5., but I’m happy with what I have!

If we're talking about my current stable, and not fantasy land, then...

- 'Ray Special 5HH (my newest addition)
- Alien Audio Lunar 5 (a true chameleon of sounds)
- 'Ray fretless 4 w/ Nordy pup/pre (my only fretless ATM, and a killer one at that)

I think that lineup offers the most versatility and reliability. The two others I own are fantastic in their own right, and it would be really hard for me to get rid of. I'm glad this is hypothetical! :)

Actually, that's where I am at right now - 3 basses total.

The first is an old Yamaha BB300, kept mainly because it's kinda sentimental - it was my first bass.

As far as actual workhorses that I play, it's easy enough: Ibanez SR506 fretted, Ibanez SRF705 fretless. Anything I want to do I will be able to do on one of these two.

I find myself working back toward that nowadays. Primary would be an upright. Second would be a good 4 string with classic sound (my Peavey Grind does that), and third would be my Tobias KillerB 6 string for its versatility.

Playing the upright almost exclusively now, I’m losing my need for fretless electric. Looking ahead I just can’t see where it would fit into a future performance scenario.
