Funny this should come up. I had already decided on my three keepers. My SG 650 which IMO out Jazzes a Jazz, my Fender Player P for classic tone and my custom Schecter. for the thunderous pickups and tuning stability. Just added pictures, my go to’s.

Fortunately, I'm in a position where I've sold a few basses the last couple of years or so and I'm down to three. These are:
  • Yamaha Attitude Ltd2. My No.1 bass, and my go-to bass when I want to rock.
  • Squier CV 50s P. Bought as a lightweight backup bass, and a different flavour of "P bass" to the Attitude (and has a tone control that the Attitude doesn't). But it's so much fun to play and looks great that I often play it instead.
  • G&L Tribute JB-2. Most recent acquisition. I started having back trouble last year and wanted another light bass, and this popped up in my search. I'd also been wanting a jazz bass for a while for the more pop and party orientated gigs, but one with a chunkier neck. What can I say, I love it.
Recently gone but not forgotten
  • Warwick Thumb BO 5 string. My old No.1 bass. Sounded great, but so neck heavy it would leave me in pain after every gig. Sat in a gig bag for years, so reluctantly decided to move it on.
  • Warwick Corvette Fretless. very heavy bass and I didn't play fretless enough to justify such a beast.
  • Yamaha Attitude Std. Backup to the Attitude Ltd2. I so wanted to love this. Replaced the pickups with Dimarzios and got close to the same sound. But the neck was too different and felt alien.
  • Yamaha RBX JM2. Amazing sounding and playing instrument. But a beast of a neck for regular gigs and I'm just not a 6 string bassist. A 4 string version with the MM pickup and same preamp would be perfect.
  • No name MM copy. Cheap bass. Played okay but sat under the bed doing nothing. Sold recently to a beginner, so I'm happy it's being used.
What I've sold and kept is a testament to how good new inexpensive instruments such as Squier and G&L Tribute series, Sire etc are getting. I really can't see me buying another higher-end bass again.

I used to think in singsongy, something-old-something-new-etc fashion, like "a P and a J, a Ric and a Ray" so that would be 4, but really you could go P, J, and then anything with 2 decent humbuckers to cover almost anything else needed. Active would help that last one even more.

Right now I have 4 basses but one is for sale, so I guess I'll say my custom short scale (with a P pup), my short scale Tbird, and my Dingwall D-roc. But I also want a Ric again. And a 6-string. Soooo....
