George lays down the funky, greasy grooves - big time.
I've seen him many times, with The Meters, the Funky Meters, with his Runnin' Pardners, and multiple projects with NOLA pals & others.
He sounded great on John Scofield's recent "Piety Street" album - wish I could have seen that band on tour.

I lived on "Piety St." for many years in NOLA!:cool:

George Porter is simply amazing.
beyond all the essential stuff under The Meters name,
I love all the stuff they did backing up Allan Touissant's artists.
Betty Harris's "Break In The Road" is just as good as it gets!
if you've never heard the Soul Jazz comps New Orleans Funk and Saturday Night Fish Fry, run don't walk!

I also have a Stanton Moore instructional video called
Take It To The Streets - A Traditional Approach To New Orleans Drumming
that features George in a nice relaxed studio environment.
Despite being targeted to drummers, anyone who plays in a rhythm section could benefit from this video.
The video also features The Dirty Dozen Brass Band - perfect for copping some funky tuba licks!
I believe it's available via Netflix.

i saw GPj together with bill kreutzman on drums (grateful dead) and this guy papa mahli on guitar. they were called the 7 walkers. it was covers of dead songs seasoned with NOLA greasefunk. it was one of the funkiest preformances ive ever seen! george porter is definatly one of my biggest heros on the bass guitar so getting to see him in action is an experience to say the least

7 Walkers played out here last week with Andy Hess on bass, I missed them because of gigs and was bummed.
Back on topic, George has long been one of my favorites.

7 walkers is ok... not a fan of Mali to much..

at Magfest 2 years ago they had the BK3 or KBM which was Kreutzman, Burbridge, & Mukouski (sp) which was absolute freakin FIRE.

don't know why I posted that it has nothing to do w. GPj. BUT, I love GPj.

When Sharon & Dap Kings got their flight stuck, some of the guys from Dumpstafunk, Hill Country Revue, Matt Grodin, GPj had a Allstar Funk Jam.

You guys should check it out on archive.org. Cody is playing a washboard w. a wah. Its pretty bananas

no... not going this year. My 15 month old was sick this weekend. I was thinking of maybe driving up on Sunday to see Peter Rowan and Company, I have not decided.


I am going to go to Friday, or Saturday of Bear Creek. Friday lineup looks better to me. Hit me up if you go, we can meet up and have a beer.

Back in the 80's when we were setting up for jazz-fest in New Orleans...George was back-stage and helped me heave my bass rig on the stage....Then he played a few licks on my bass, so I could go out in the crowd for a sound-check to see how it sounded...

Needless to say it sounded fantastic!..What a great guy!
