My guitar/vocals/frontman/BL is an even older pooder than me. He doesn't know how he did it it last night any better than he knows how he's going to do it tonight; He just does it. Though after over a hundred gigs this past year, I dare say there might be a method to his madness.
Whether there is or isn't, this band's way of doing things definitely keeps me on my toes - No two gigs are quite the same.
It might even play well with my attention deficit disorder.
Reminds me of a story told to me by a drummer/BL I've worked with in another band over the past 13 years.
James Curtis used to play with Lightnin' Hopkins in the '70s. Before his first gig with him in LA, the bass player pulled James aside and told him, "Lightnin's gonna change things up without telling anyone. The first time we miss a change, he's gonna turn around and give you, the drummer, the stink eye. You gotta give him the stink eye back or he'll be doing that to you the rest of the tour."
So the first time they missed a change, sure enough, Lightnin' turned around and glared daggers at James; James balled his face up into the meanest, ugliest look he could muster and glared right back at him.
The rest of the night, whenever it happened again, Lightnin' glared at the bass player instead.
After the show, the bass player told James, "Man, I was just messin' with you; I didn't think you'd really do it!"
