I think a JPJ would be best set up with a
Hey all,
Im currently have a custom bass being built for me. Its gonna be a Landing Bass in a J P J three pickup format. Ive decided to go with 3 stack knobs. Of which, each pickup receives a volume and tone.
On top of that I will have three small jaguar style On-Off switches for each pup. I basically wanted to get individual control over every pickup and have options as well. Right now the builder is planning on using 500k stack pots, but I may go with 250k pots. Not too sure.
I wanted to see how other 3 pickup bass owners configured their knobs and electronics. And if you want to give some opinion on the route Ive gone, please chime in. Here's a few picks of my bass from a month or so ago.
I like to think of the goals in mind before I'd design the control scheme.
Why did you opt for the JPJ configuration?
The neck J pickup would likely be good for dialing in some boom or woof.
The middle P pickup is where your mids will be mostly coming from. Sort of the "Well rounded" default bass tone.
The bridge pickup would likely be good for adding in some grind and/or bite.
Then of course you get a scoop if you use two or more pickups together at once. The P and bridge J would be somewhat of a quasi-Jazz bass scooped sound. The two Js together would likely sound somewhere between a Ric and a Jazz as far as that scoop goes. The neck J and middle P may sound somewhat like a Ric scoop.
So what sort of tone is part of your style?
If it were me, I wouldn't add a separate volume and tone for each pickup. There's just too much going on at that rate. Also the tones will most likely interact, not just control the tone of one pickup.
A master tone is all I'd use. You'll have more than enough variation in tone from blending pickups. Beyond that there are lots of ways to divide up the pickups with volumes and switches. It really depends on which pickups you'd use most often, and what sort of music you want to play what I would do there. Also subject to preference which I won't share yours entirely Im sure.
