3 Sigma bass guitar IRs ... anyone tried them?

I have a fair amount from them:
Aguilar DB810
Ampeg SVT810
GK MB 112
GK Neo 810
Trace Elliot 1048
Markbass 104HR

I think they're fine IRs overall. I'm not sure what you mean by "how do they sound". I don't have the cabs themselves so I cannot directly A/B them, but, I've found great uses for each of them in presets in my Fractal Audio gear.

Has anyone tried these? They do a Precision, Jazz, Rick, Stingray, hofner and Ibanez How do they sound? Thanks

Impulse responses can work for cabinets, amplifiers, things of that sort. But for basses?

The response (whether you think about it as a frequency response or as in impulse response (IR)) of a bass depends on pickup positioning, and string tuning (among other things, but these things are key). The pickup position along a string, in conjunction to the note the open string is tuned to, determines a comb filter for that string. There's the rub!

If you want to properly model a bass guitar's response, well, it's not so easy, because a bass guitar has 4, 5, or 6 responses (depending on how many strings it has) - there is not just one response. If you want to use IR's to "convert" one bass to another, the only way you can actually do that is to start with a bass that has a polyphonic pickup (so you can isolate the information that comes from each string), and an output per string. The IR program would need to run one IR per string, and then combine the result to give you the output of a different "modelled" bass. Anyone trying to sell you anything where you can take your bass's combined output, and "convert" it to the sound of another bass....is selling you snake oil. The Physics preclude that actually happening with any degree of accuracy.

You're correct about IRs not being able to account for notes being played on different strings. But acoustic guitarists are using IRs to make piezo pickups sound more like mic'd up instruments with pretty good results. Obviously it's never as good as a real mic signal, and the fact that it doesn't account for each string separately is part of that. But it's still an improvement as far as many players are concerned.

Yes a piezo pickup isn't a comb filter in the same way a magnetic bass pickup is, but that effect changes to some degree with every fret position as the harmonic nodes and antinodes end up in different places. An EQ profile that approximates overall effect of pickup position and voicing might actually be close enough to be workable for many players.

So suppose someone plays a jazz with rounds or an Ibanez ERB and really wants the "P with flats" vibe for one or two songs without bringing one. An IR at/near the beginning of the signal chain might be a convenient solution that would work well enough in a live mix, not that most of the audience would notice the change anyway.

IMO the biggest issue with the idea of buying instrument-based IRs is that for most accurate results, they would have to take your particular bass's EQ profile into account. The 3 Sigma IRs are made for "humbuckers" and "single coils," each of which encompasses a pretty wide range of sounds. It's easy to use a cabinet IR because it doesn't have to account for a specific source signal; it just models the frequency response a given cabinet would have on any input signal. A little more complicated here. Still, I imagine people will buy these and be happy enough.

Not me though... :laugh:

thank you for replies so far.... I'm looking to replace my variax bass .... which appears to have died, sad to say... variax worked via 4 piezos so i guess they dealt with each string individually, as does the Roland GK system (??). The sound samples on the 3 Sigma site sound ok to my ears... just wondering whether anyone has used the IRs in the flesh....
