All due respect to your better half, but three-color Fender sunburst with a tortoise-look pickguard is a classic combination, and extra points awarded if it's an amber clear neck.

Depends on the color of the fretboard.

Rosewood - Tort rules.
Maple - White or white pearl.
Rosewood with blocks - Black. This is because the inlays in the neck plus the grain finish of the 3TBS is so busy that a tort guard just pushes it over the top. Something has to take a back seat and bring some calm.
Maple with blocks - Match the blocks; black with black, MoP with MoP.

That’s only the correct answer if we’re talking about 2 tone sunburst.

Stratocasters come with white more often than not.

SB F basses come with tort. Or gold aluminum on a ttsb. It is as nature intended.

That's what I've always put on mine.

I like Gold Anodized, but only with a maple board. But here are MY "rules of thumb":

Sunburst/Rosewood: Tort or 3-ply black (B/W/B)
Sunburst/Maple: 3-ply Black or Gold Anodized

Here's a bit of a twist. I have an American Special P-Bass in Honeyburst/Maple. It came with a Parchment pickguard. But I put a Gold Anodized on it and I think it looks great. Below that is a Lakland Jazz (Chi-Sonic pups) in Aztec Gold/Rosewood. Also came with a Parchment guard, which I swapped out for Brown Tort.
