A student of mine picked up an very good sounding and feeling Fender MIM P-bass and gig bag for $300. These can be found for less, too. A good one totally nails the P-bass sound and feel, IMHO.

The new Ibanez SR300M is STUNNING in that price range (it's $299). I played one @ NAMM & again today at a music store~ you will love it.

Right now, there's a "rash" of Ibanez ATK700's(the ones with figured tops, not the 300) available new for right at $300. They're usually $700 new, street price, but they're being discontinued/replaced by the newer version, the ATK750 (has an additional J pup in the neck position), so Ibanez blew out the remaining 700s, and dealers are letting them go cheap. Check ebay. These are good basses, especially for the money. They get a great J sound, a great "MM style" sound, playability's good ... it's all there. Alotta bass for the $$$. Check the reviews. They'll be gone soon, but after that, you can typically find a used ATK300 for around $300. They're just as good, without the cosmetic upgrades. Best thing in that price range, in my opinion. Better than the SR series, and MUCH better than any Squier.

Yamaha makes nice basses in the $150-$300 range. The money shouldn't burn a hole in your pocket though. Save up for a little while and you can move up to the $350-400 range where you have more options.

yes! then i guess all i have to fix is the neck dive and im good to go thanks so much guys!!! i wasnt really sure, but now im set on the t-bird!!

Like J. Crawford above said it's an easy fix. The machine heads are as light as possible as is (being aluminium apparently) that the neck dive won't be helped by much. BUT the quality will, as the aluminium shaft will snap cleanly at the splines at some inconvenient point. At least mine did. That one's steel now .

Another option, when they're available near You, would be the LTD Explorer if that shape rocks your boat. Same scale lenght, same pickups, the same (?) neck profile and as a plus, a set neck. Mine's on it's way as we speak . Might be a hair pricier though, but not by much.
