In that specific case, that teacher, who is still teaching and has trained some fine bassists, taught exactly the way he was taught, starting as a child. I think his teaching style works for some students if they start with him when they're young and stay until 18. I found him useless for things like how to improve my acro tone because he had no conception of how good tone is produced, he just knew how to do it, like walking. Sometimes, one person's lousy teacher can be another's inspiration. Sometimes they're just no-talent hacks that take your money. And sometimes they're well-meaning but incompetent. When they're good though, I find it a real joy to work with them.
