4 and a half minute song

Im new to playing the bass, its been an amazing 8months taking lessons
(im 60yrs old and semi-retired), but im now learning my first complete song. The song is 4:30 minutes long and im about halfway through…. Im at the bridge and man is this tough.

Gerry Rafferty Right Down the Line is the song……
That’s a challenging place to start …great bass line though. There are many simpler tunes to conquer more easily should you get frustrated.

Thank you so much for just saying what you said about it being a tough baseline. I only know something is tough if it goes fast and I’m too new to really know anything so I guess I’m just gonna say thank you very much for replying and acknowledging that it is kind of challenging, but I’m still making it through. I got about two minutes more to learn.

[QUOTE="hrodbert696, post: 27584859,
Welcome to the low end! You'll find yourself picking up material faster and faster as you go. The more you learn, the better you get at learning.[/QUOTE]

I learned a couple versions of 12bar blues backing track and i hear what ur saying, im actually hearing bass lines in songs i have been listening to for decades, and while i dont pick up immediately, i end up getting it ☺️

Thsnx for the reply

The best thing you can do at this stage in your development, is play along to the songs you like. Obviously, you can’t just jump in and do that. There are some skills that have to be mastered first:
  1. Listen to the songs you love. Radio, album, streaming service — whatever. Not just once — a few times. Many times.
  2. Zero in on the bass line. Focus your ear on the bass. Know the rhythms, and the up-and-down movements. I have been listening to my favorite music for 50 years. I don’t know the words, I don’t know the lead guitar part, I don’t always even know the melody. I but I can sing all the bass parts.
  3. Start learning to translate what you hear into what you play. I won’t lie. This takes years. Decades even. And there’s really only one way to test this. Turn on your favorite channel and just start playing along. To all the songs that you know by now— even the songs you don’t know. It’s good practice.

Welcome..this is where you learn. If you get frustrated, walk away for a bit then come back to it. Get a dry erase board to keep track of any parts of a song you learn. Break it into sections. Intro, V= verse...C= chorus, B = bridge, L= lead. After each letter write the notes. Should look like this: EXAMPLE.
Intro=
V= G - C - D etc:
C=
B=
L=
(Not necessarily in this order)
Once you completed this you should have the song. Go slow and correct your mistakes as you go. Before you know it you will have a song done. There are several ways to do it but, if you have a visual reference it works better, especially in the beginning. Don't give up, good luck!

Thanx man, my teacher gives me the charts with tabs and actual music which im learning too, thanks again man

Love his stuff. This was my 2nd fovorite Gerry Rafferty. First, Personal favorite, Days gone down... Fitting song for this old fart.

Good luck on the start of your bass journey. I'm edging towards the end of mine, and wouldn't change a thing.

Umm and I picked up an ampeg410he and a GK Backline600, used of course. The open E was causing my single10” practice amp to fart☺️
