4 Different Tones From One Set.....

Ever had that for you?

Some 4 string sets (especially roundwounds) that I've had in the past that I bought locally or were on the bass when I bought it:-

Each string has it's own different tone.....usually the worst one is the A string.

E:- will sound grindy
A:- will sound hollow and woofy...even worse past the 10th fret....
D:- will sound too upper mid oriented
G:- will sound thin and tinny-ish....

Yeah, I have, too. In my case, though, it's always been a sign that :
1) Something's out of wack at the bridge/tailpiece/nut/tuner(s); or
2) I should either check for; twisted strings; bad break angle(s); or install them in the circular file and get new ones.

I have thought that very thing before about various strings. Daddario XL nickels are the first that come to mind.

Usually "non balanced" sets have this issue. Try a set of balanced gauges, and see how they sound more "balanced".
